UMC Tennis Drops Nail-Biter 5-4 to MSU Moorhead

GRAND FORKS, N.D.  – The University of Minnesota Crookston women's tennis team put up a fight but narrowly fell 5-4 to Minnesota State University Moorhead at Choice Health & Fitness in Grand Forks, N.D. The Golden Eagles fall to 1-12 (0-10 NSIC) on the year. MSU Moorhead improves to 3-10 on the year.
 
In doubles, UMC was able to take two of the three matches to take an early 2-1 advantage over the Dragons. At the No. 1 slot, Katelyn Johnson (Jr., Monticello, Minn.) and Catherine Brown (Fr., Powell Butte, Ore.) upended Morgan Smith and Cassie Smith 8-3 for their fourth doubles win of the year. At No. 2 doubles, Amanda Pihlaja (Sr., Duluth, Minn.) and Holly Roepke (Sr., Osage, Minn.) defeated Jenna Galstad and Jaime LaCoursiere 8-5 to improve to 5-8 on the season. At the No. 3 spot, MSU Moorhead's Kaitlin McNary and Kaitlyn Emerson took a highly contested match against Casey Paris (Jr., Fairmont, Minn.) and Amanda Newman (Jr., Rosemount, Minn.) 9-8.
 
In singles, the Golden Eagles were able to take two matches which proved to be one match short of what they needed for the victory. At No. 1 singles, the Dragons' Galstad defeated Roepke 6-0, 6-1. At the No. 2 spot, Johnson upended Morgan Smith, 7-5, 6-0 to improve to 5-8 on the year. At the No. 3 slot, Brown defeated Ashley Wood, 6-0, 6-4 to improve to 6-7 on the season. At No. 4 singles, Pihlaja went three sets with Cassie Smith but ultimately fell 6-1, 4-6, 8-10. At the No. 5 slot, LaCoursiere defeated Paris 6-3, 6-2. At the No. 6 spot, MSU Moorhead's Emerson defeated Newman 6-2, 6-1.
