JAMESTOWN, N.D. – The University of Minnesota Crookston men's basketball team fell 80-68 to an experienced University of Jamestown squad Tues., Nov. 10 at the Jamestown Civic Center in Jamestown, N.D. The Golden Eagles would have moments of success, but 16 points from Aaron Ashley off the bench and 15 from Brequan Tucker would lead the Jimmies past UMC.
The Golden Eagles were led by 14 points from
C.J. Polk (So., G, Milwaukee, Wis.), while
Derrick Redd, Jr. (Sr., G, Menifee, Calif.) added 12 and
Kobe Critchley (Fr., G, Roseville, Minn.) chipped in 12.
Chase Knickerbocker (Fr., G/F, Annandale, Minn.) came off the bench for nine points and five boards, while
Aaron Hollcraft (Fr., G, Crookston, Minn.) and
Xavier Hall (Jr., G, Woodbury, Minn.) each had six off the bench. UMC shot 19-of-47 from the field for 40.4 percent and were 10-of-25 for 40.0 percent. They struggled on the charity stripe, hitting 20-of-30 for 66.0 percent.
In addition to Tucker and Ashley, Logan Brown added 11 points, while Jake Hagler had nine. The Jimmies were 34-of-67 for 50.7 percent from the field.
Jamestown would get out to the 13-9 advantage on a Tucker jumper with 14 minutes left in the first half. The Jimmies would extend their lead to 19-12 on a three-pointer by Jon Purintun. The Golden Eagles would get their way back into the game with three-pointers from Critchley and Hollcraft to get within one (19-18) with nine minutes remaining.
Jamestown would be able to get their lead back out to 24-20 on a Jacob Havron jumper but Hollcraft would connect on another three to get UMC within 24-23. However, Mark Potter would hit a trey to get Jamestown back out to a 27-23 advantage. A Keegan Syvrud lay-up would get Jamestown back out to a 29-23 lead. Jamestown would be able to get their lead out to 33-23 with four minutes remaining.
The Golden Eagles would get the game back within five led by a Redd three-pointer and a Smith free throw to make it 33-28 in favor of the Jimmies. Tucker would hit a jumper to extend their lead back out to 35-28 but Redd would find Critchley for the trey as UMC would get back within 35-31 with 30 seconds remaining. Jake Hagler would hit 1-of-2 free throws at the end of the half to make it 36-31 going into the break.
UMC was led by eight points from Critchley at the break. He was 3-of-4 from the field and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. Redd added seven points on 2-of-5 from the field and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc, while Hollcraft came off the bench for six and was 2-of-2 from beyond the arc.
Jamestown looked to Brown, who had nine points on 4-of-5 from the field, while Tucker added eight points on 4-of-7. Ashley came off the bench for six on 2-of-3 from beyond the arc.
Jamestown would score four quick points out of the break to get out to a 40-31 lead, however Redd would connect on his third trey on the game to get UMC back within six at 40-34. Jamestown would take their lead back out to 44-35 on a Brown lay-up with 16:40 left in the game. Their lead would get out to 50-37 on back-to-back Tucker shots. The Jimmies lead would get out to 55-40 on a Hagler trey.
The Golden Eagles would get the lead down to 10 led by a Hall fast-break lay-up and 3-of-4 free throws from the charity stripe for the junior college transfer as the lead was cut to 55-45 with just under 12 minutes left in the game. The Jimmies would be able to get their lead back out to 61-45 on an Ashley three with 11:09 remaining.
The Jamestown lead would push out to 69-51 with 8:10 left on an Ashley three. The Golden Eagles would cut the lead to 74-62 on two
C.J. Polk free throws with 4:02 left in the game.
The Golden Eagles would get the lead within single-digits as Polk took it down the court and converted an old-fashioned three-point play with 2:18 left in the game.
UMC will officially open up the season Fri., Nov. 13 as they take on Waldorf College in Forest City, Iowa at 7 p.m.
