(7/16/07)- Golden Eagle Athletics Hire Nate Mahlen and Kim Roysland (Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston's athletic department announced today that Nate Mahlen and Kim Roysland have been hired to fill two coaching positions. Mahlen was hired as the head women's golf coach / assistant women's basketball coach and Roysland was hired as the part-time assistant women's golf coach. Mahlen played for Head Women's Basketball Coach Mike Roysland at Win-E-Mac High School and was Roysland's assistant coach for four seasons at Fosston High School in Fosston, Minn. He was an assistant coach for the 2000 Win-E-Mac state tournament team. Last season Mahlen was a volunteer assistant coach with the Golden Eagle Women's Basketball team. He is a native of Erskine, Minn., and graduated from Jamestown College in 2000 with a bachelor of science degree in elementary education and a minor in physical education with an emphasis in coaching. He lives in Fosston with his wife, Rochelle, and two children, Noah and Brynlea. Assistant Coach Abby Hearn, accepted the head coaching position at Eureka College in Eureka, Ill. Eureka College is a Division III institution in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC). Roysland brings 23 years of varsity girl's golf coaching experience to the Golden Eagle Women's Golf program. In her tenure at Fosston High School, she was named State Golf Coach of the Year three times ('90, '93, '94). Her teams made nine state tournament appearances and were three-time state champions ('92, '93, '94). Roysland earned her bachelor of science degree in physical education & health from Bemidji State University in Bemidji, Minn. She has been a health & physical education teacher at the Fosston Public Schools since 1987. Roysland lives in Fosston with her husband, Mike, who is the head Golden Eagle Women's Basketball coach.
(4/25/07)- Golden Eagle Women's Basketball Signs (Crookston, Minn.)-The Golden Eagle Women's Basketball program announced today the signing of Jessica Biddle to a National Letter of Intent. Biddle is a 6'0", post player, from Black Hawk East College. Black Hawk East College is a Division I Junior College in Kewanee, Ill. At Black Hawk East, she was a two-year All-Regional selection, two-year All-Conference selection and a two-year team MVP. Following her 2007 season, Biddle earned All-Region MVP honors and was named Second Team All-American. "Jess is a great addition to our program," says Head Coach Mike Roysland. "She will bring instant support to the post position which will give us flexibility both offensively and defensively. Just as importantly, she brings a work ethic that is second to none." Biddle plans to major in Equine Industries at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. She is the daughter of Mike and Helen Biddle.
(4/16/07)- Golden Eagle Women's Basketball Signs 12 for 2007-2008 Season (Crookston, Minn.)- Head Coach Mike Roysland announced today the signing of 12 recruits to the Golden Eagle Women's Basketball team for the 2007-2008 season. Kalimah Newson-Duvall is a 6'1" forward from Roosevelt High School. In her senior season, she averaged 4.6 rebounds per game and shot 62% from the free-throw line. "Kalimah is a very athletic post player, who not only runs the floor, but also steps out from the block and knocks down shots. She has a lot of untapped potential and we are excited to have the opportunity to develop her in our program." Newson-Duvall plans to major in Health Sciences at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. She is the daughter of Elaine Duvall. Kimberly Grant is a 6'2" center from Roosevelt High School. In her senior season, she averaged 9 points per game and 9 rebounds per game. She was named All-Conference in the '06-'07 season and the captain of the varsity basketball team. "Kimberly will be adding some power and height to the post position. She is a great rebounder, who is aggressive and not afraid of physical contact down in the post. She has the potential to compete for significant minutes in the post," comments Head Coach Mike Roysland. Grant plans to major in Business at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. She is the daughter of Claudia and Andrew Brown. Ana Garcia is a 5'7" guard from Hopkins High School. In her senior season, she averaged 6.6 points per game, 3.4 rebounds, and had a 67.9 free-throw percentage. Garcia is a four-time All-State recipient, two-time MVP, two-time leading scorer and a Classic Lake All-Conference Honorable Mention player. "Ana is a very decorated Minnesota basketball player who is extremely knowledgeable and very hard working. She is a versatile player, who does anything that is asked of her on the court," says Head Coach Mike Roysland. "Ana has also played on two of the top high school teams in the state during her career and knows what it takes to win. I feel she will be an immediate impact player on this team." Ana plans to major in Business at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. She is the daughter of Al and Sheila Garcia. Jenna Dolence is a 5'8" guard from Moorhead High School. In her senior season, she averaged 9.8 points per game, 4.2 assists per game and 2.5 steals per game. "Jenna is an outstanding defender, who will add quickness to our backcourt. She is a true "team player" who has the ability to score and run the floor," says head coach Mike Roysland. She comes from a very successful high school program (2007 State Tournament) and is a genuine winner." Dolence plans to major in Mass Communications at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. She is the daughter of Dave and Ann Dolence. Gina Jaroszewski is a 5'11" forward from Moorhead High School. In her senior season, she averaged 15.4 points per game, 6.9 rebounds per game and shot 74% from the free-throw line. "Gina is a phenomenal shooter who brings a lot of length to the wing position," comments head coach Mike Roysland. "She is a catch and shoot player who has a quick release and tremendous range. She comes from a very successful program that competed in the state tournament." Jaroszewski is undeclared on a major at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. She is the daughter of Greg and Theresa Jaroszewski. Jamie Zelinsky is a 6'0" forward from Park Center Senior High School. In her senior season, she averaged 22 points per game, 5.2 rebounds per game and was 78% from the free- throw line. She is a three-time All-Conference member, three-time Channel 12 All-Area Team and is Park Center's All-Time Leading Scorer. "Jamie is a remarkable athlete (outstanding in 3 varsity sports) who can play multiple positions on the court. Her length and versatility will be a great asset to the Golden Eagles. She can flat-out score and will be looked upon early to be a difference-maker," comments Head Coach Mike Roysland. Zelinsky is undeclared on a major at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. She is the daughter of Julie Walter and Joel Wulff and Jeff and Holly Zelinsky. Jill Zelinsky is a 6'0" forward from Park Center Senior High School. In her senior season, she averaged nine points per game, four rebounds per game and averaged two steals per game. "Jill is a versatile player who brings length and athleticism (outstanding 3 sport athlete) to the floor. I think she made great strides throughout her senior season as a player. She has exceptional charisma and will be a great addition to the team," says Head Coach Mike Roysland. Zelinsky is currently undeclared on a major at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. She is the daughter of Julie Walter and Joel Wulff and Jeff and Holly Zelinsky. Diana Taddy is a 5'8" guard from Two Rivers High School. In her senior season, she averaged 14.8 points per game, 5.3 rebounds per game, had 2.3 steals per game and had a 63.4% free-throw percentage. "Diana adds a magnificent amount of speed to the point guard position. She has the ability to score at will, as well as defend," says Head Coach Mike Roysland. "Diana brings a real understanding for the game and is a great decision-maker, who I will look to early to be a floor leader." Taddy plans to major in Psychology and Education at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. She is the daughter of Dawn and Fran Taddy. Johanna (JoJo) Haerter is a 5'9" guard from West Fargo High School. In her senior season, she averaged 8.39 points per game, 4.06 rebounds per game and had 1.89 assists per game. Haerter won the Most Hustle Award for 2004-05 and the Sixth Woman Award in 2005-06. "JoJo is a very smart basketball player that brings a tremendous amount of energy and enthusiasm to the court. Her attitude and work ethic is top notch and you couldn't ask for a better person to join your team," says Head Coach Mike Roysland. "She is coming from one of the top high school programs in North Dakota and she will be a great asset to the team." Haerter is undeclared on a major at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. She is the daughter of Dave and Jane Haerter. Mindy Nieuwboer is a 5'7" guard from Luverne High School. In her senior season, she averaged 18 points per game, 7.7 rebounds per game and had 2.64 steals per game. Nieuwboer was a four-year letter winner, two-time All-Conference member, two-time Hustle Award winner and reached the 1,000 career point mark her senior season. "Mindy brings a great work ethic to the team and has the versatility to play many positions. She is a proven scorer and also has a real "nose" for defense, averaging almost 4 steals a game," comments Head Coach Mike Roysland. Nieuwboer plans to major in Pre-Veterinary Medicine at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. She is the daughter of Duane and Carla Nieuwboer. Kayla Bowar is a 5'4" guard from Fargo-Shanley High School. She was a North Dakota All-State Softball Selection in 2005 and 2006 and was a Fargo-Shanley softball captain during the 2006 and 2007 campaigns. "Kayla is an extremely quick player with the ability to attack the rim and can also shoot the three. She is very aggressive defensively with exceptional work ethic. Kayla comes from a great high school program at Fargo Shanley," says Head Coach Mike Roysland. Kayla plans to major in Sport & Recreation Management at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. She is the daughter of Myron and Joan Bowar of Moorhead, Minn. Katie Bowar is a 5'4" guard from Fargo-Shanley High School. She was named to the 2006 North Dakota All-State Softball team and was the captain of the Fargo-Shanley basketball and softball teams in 2006 and 2007. "Katie is a very team oriented, patient player, who capitalizes on her opportunities (offensively and defensively) during the game. Katie also comes from a great high school program at Fargo Shanley," comments Head Coach Mike Roysland. Katie plans to major in Business Management at UMC. She is the daughter of Myron and Joan Bowar of Moorhead, Minn.
(3/28/07)- AARON SMITH AND THERESA CRANCE NAMED NSIC ALL-ACADEMIC The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference announced its All-Academic Teams for the 2006-07 winter athletic season. To be eligible for this honor, the student-athlete must be a member of the varsity traveling team and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or better. Furthermore, the student-athlete must have reached sophomore academic and athletic standing at the institution represented with one full year completed at that particular institution. Aaron Smith, a junior, guard for the University of Minnesota, Crookston (UMC) men's basketball team was named to this year's team. Smith, from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is in his first year at UMC, transferring from Iowa Lakes Community College. On the season, he averaged 8.6 points and 3.0 rebounds per game. Smith finished the season shooting an outstanding 84.6% from the free-throw line. Smith is majoring in Business Management at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. UMC women's basketball player, Theresa Crance was also named All-Academic. Crance, who also plays volleyball for the Golden Eagles, is a junior from Timber Lake, South Dakota. Theresa has made the All-Academic team two years in a row for basketball and this past fall was named All-Academic for volleyball. On the season Crance averaged 2.5 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. She led the team with 16 blocks on the season. Crance is a Pre-Medicine major at the University of Minnesota, Crookston.
(2/24/07)- Peacocks Defeat Golden Eagles in Season Finale (Fayette, IA)- The Golden Eagles ended the season with a hard fought loss to Upper Iowa University tonight 83-57. The Peacocks were hot from beyond the arc, going 7-12 from long range, taking a 42-28 into the locker room at the half. UMC's Theresa Crance (Jr., F/C, Timber Lake, SD) had 14 points in this game, with 12 rebounds and two assists. She was 7 of 11 in the paint and racked up two blocks and a steal. Kelsey Van Ackeren (Fr., G, St. Cloud, MN) made 13 points on the night, she was 5-10 from field goals and 3-6 behind the line. Van Ackeren also had three rebounds two assists and one steal. The Peacocks were led by Amanda Faas' 18 points. The night ended with the Peacocks defeating the Golden Eagles 83-57. This loss puts the Golden Eagles at 0-27 overall and 0-17 in the NSIC conference. Upper Iowa moves to 9-18 overall and 5-13 in the NSIC.
(2/23/07)- Warriors Use First Half Surge to Defeat Golden Eagles (Winona, Minn.)- The Warriors used nine three-pointers in the first half to explode out of the gates to take a 43-21 half-time lead. In the second half, the Golden Eagle defense tightened up to play Winona State to a second session tie with each team scoring 30 points a piece. However the first half deficit was the deciding factor in the game as WSU took the win 73-51. Katie Cheline (Fr., F, Mondovi, Wis.) and Trissilyn Clayton (Jr., G, Chicago, Ill.) led the Golden Eagles with 11 points a piece. Nikki Fleck led the way for the Warriors, leading all scorers with 16 points. The Golden Eagles move to 0-26 overall and 0-17 in the NSIC. Winona State is now 14-11 overall and 10-7 in the NSIC. UMC Travels to Fayette, Iowa tomorrow for the final game of the season against the Upper Iowa Peacocks. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
(2/17/07)- Mistakes Cost Golden Eagles in Final Home Game (Crookston, Minn.)- The Golden Eagle Women's Basketball team played the Wolves of Northern State University tonight in a one sided battle that saw the Wolves lead all but one time in the game. Shots were not dropping for the Golden Eagles as the Wolves won 66-44 at Lysaker Gymnasium. The first half was a rough one for the Golden Eagles only shooting 24.2% from the field. The Wolves were 15-33 in the first half shooting 45.5%. The height and execution from the Wolves was a continuing problem for the Golden Eagles in the half. The Wolves did not have a problem with ball distribution, dishing 14 assists in the half. With 9:00 minutes left in the half, the Golden Eagles were down 10-16. With 5:23 left, the Wolves extended their lead to 18 going on a 12-0 run. The Golden Eagles had six points on second chance opportunities in the first. Katie Cheline (Fr., F, Mondovi, Wis.) had seven points, two rebounds and an assist in the first half. Noelle Hall had eight points and a block in the first half for the Wolves. The Golden Eagles improved their shot percentage in the second half, hitting 9 of 28, shooting 32.1% in the half. Katie Cheline had 15 points on the night, three assists, and three of her four rebounds were on the offensive side. Brittany Milne (Jr., G, Glendive, Mont.) had a season high eight rebounds, two assists and a steal on the night. Dori Davis (Fr., G, Milwaukie, Wis.) had 10 points, two rebounds and one block. Points in the paint were a huge difference in the score with the Wolves commanding the post with 34 points over the Golden Eagles 22 down low. The Wolves also had 35 points off of the bench. The loss puts the Golden Eagles at 0-25 and 0-16 in NSIC play. Northern State University is now 19-7 overall and 12-5 in conference play. The Golden Eagles travel to Winona State University on February 23rd to take on the Warriors at 6:00 p.m. The team takes on Upper Iowa on February 24th. That game is also scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
(2/16/07)- Sloppy Game Weighs in Marauders Favor (Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston faced off against the University of Mary at Lysaker Gymnasium in an undisciplined showdown seeing 40 turnovers overall on the night. The Marauders prevailed tonight 62-42 over the Golden Eagles In the first half both teams had slippery fingers with the Golden Eagles giving up 11 turnover's to the Marauders eight. Both teams contributed from the bench with the Marauders leading with 11 points to the Golden Eagles 10. Trissilyn Clayton (Jr, G, Chicago, Ill.) had eight points, one block, a steal and a rebound in the first half. She shot 50% from the field in the first half. Lisa Guss had nine points and two assists for the Marauders. At the end of the half, the Golden Eagles trailed the Marauders 31-23. In the second half, Katie Cheline (Fr, F, Mondovi, Wisc.) exploded with 11 points in the half bringing her game total to 18 points and 11 rebounds and three steals on the night. This was her third double-double of the season. Brittany Milne (Jr., G, Glendive, Mont.) also beat her season high with 10 points on the night. However, some of the individual efforts were not enough for the Golden Eagles. As in the first half, the Golden Eagles continued to turn the ball over committing 12 turnovers in the half and 23 overall. The University of Mary had a sloppy night as well handling the ball, committing 17 turnovers. The Marauders took advantage of Golden Eagle turnovers scoring 23 points to the Golden Eagles seven. The Golden Eagles overall record is now 0-24 overall and 0-15 in NSIC play. The Marauders are now 12-13 overall and 8-8 in conference play. UMC faces Northern State University tomorrow night at Lysaker Gymnasium. It is the team's last home game of the season. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. Next weekend the Golden Eagles close out the regular season traveling to Winona State and Upper Iowa.
(2/10/07)- Turnovers Costly in Golden Eagle Loss (Bemidji, Minn.)- The Golden Eagle Women's basketball team lost a hard fought NSIC game against Bemidji State University tonight at the BSU Gymnasium 61-88. Trissilyn Clayton (Jr., G, Chicago, Ill.) and Jackie Artise (So., G, Northeast, Penn.) each scored 13 tonight, leading the Golden Eagles in points. Clayton went 4-13 from the field, 1-8 from three-point land and 4-6 at the free-throw line. She also had five rebounds and three steals. Artise was 4-9 from the field, 3-5 from behind the arc, a perfect 2-2 from the free-throw line and grabbed three rebounds. Katie Cheline (Fr., F, Mondovi, Wis.) had eight rebounds on the night. Stephanie Peterson led the Beavers with 17 points on the night. The loss brings the Golden Eagles to 0-23 overall and 0-14 in the NSIC. Golden Eagle's Basketball hosts the University of Mary and Northern State University on February 16th and 17th at Lysaker Gymnasium. It is the final home series of the season. Game times are set for 6:00 p.m. for the women and 8:00 p.m. for the men.
(2/3/07)- Dragons Double-Up on Golden Eagles (Moorhead, Minn.)- MSU-Moorhead, the ninth ranked team in the Central Region, doubled-up on the Golden Eagles 90-45 tonight at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse on the Moorhead campus. In the first half, Kelsey Van Ackeren (Fr, G, St. Cloud, Minn.) had 12 points and was 2-3 behind the three point line. As a team the Golden Eagles shot 29% from the field, however free- throws kept them in the game when Moorhead committed 12 personal fouls and the Golden Eagles took full of advantage converting on 10-14 free-throw attempts. The Dragons had the lead at the end of half 46-30. The second half was a rough one for the Golden Eagles. The team only shot 17.4% from the field. Jackie Artise (So. G, Northeast, PA.) stepped up and scored nine points and had two rebounds in the second half. Alison Nash-Gerlach had 10 points and 12 rebounds in second half for the Dragons. She ended her day with 14 rebounds and 10 points. The Dragons played solid down low, scoring 26 points in the paint to UMC's six. The Golden Eagles are now 0-22 overall and 0-13 in NSIC conference play while the Dragons improve to 16-5 overall and 10-2 in conference play. The Golden Eagles travel next Saturday February 10th to play conference rival Bemidji State. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m
(2/2/07)- Golden Eagles Start Cold, Fall to Golden Bears
Katie Cheline (Fr., F, Mondovi, Wis.) led UMC with 14 points, hitting one of her two three-pointers and going 4-11 from the field. Cheline was the only player for UMC in double figures against the Golden Bears. The Golden Bears Mary Schroeder, scored 14 of her 18 points in the first half, and the Golden Eagle's went in for halftime behind 28-40. Crookston shot 72% from the free-throw line, but the tough defense of the Golden Bears shut them down in the field, only shooting 27.7% for the game. The loss brings the Golden Eagles to 0-21 overall and 0-12 in the NSIC. The Golden Bears move to 12-8 overall and 9-2 in the NSIC. The women will be in Moorhead, Minn. on Saturday night to take on Minnesota State University-Moorhead at 6:00 p.m.
(1/27/07)- Personal Fouls Prove Costly for the Golden Eagles (Crookston, Minn.)- The Golden Eagles took on the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State University in NSIC conference action at Lysaker Gymnasium this evening. Second half turnovers committed by the Golden Eagles were the difference maker in the outcome as SMSU went on to the 65-53 win. In the first half, the Golden Eagles played almost flawlessly committing only one personal foul which kept them close with the Mustangs. Going into the half, the Golden Eagles were trailing the Mustangs 28-27. Kelsey Van Ackeren (Fr., G, St. Cloud, Minn.) put up nine points and Theresa Crance (Jr., F, Timber Lake, S.D.) had six rebounds. Mustangs forward Sara Leidall scored eight points for SMSU. The Golden Eagles struggled in the second half, committing 14 personal fouls, 10 turnovers, and shot 12-23 at the free throw line. Kelsey Van Ackeren had a career high 19 points. She also had 4 rebounds on the night. Katie Cheline (Fr., F, Mondovi, Wis.) had 11 points and Trissilyn Clayton (Jr., G, Chicago, Ill.) added 10 points and three steals to tonight's totals. Theresa Crance finished the night with 10 rebounds, five of them coming on the offensive side. Megan Wittkop led the Mustangs with 16 points and eight rebounds. The loss puts the Golden Eagles at 0-20 overall and 0-11 in NSIC play, while the Mustangs snapped an eleven game losing streak and improved to 5-15 overall and 2-9 in NSIC conference play. Next Friday, the Golden Eagles take on Concordia - St. Paul at 6:00 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn.
(1/26/07)- Turnovers Costly for the Golden Eagles (Crookston, Minn.) The Golden Eagles lost to the Wayne State College Wildcats tonight 84-44 at Lysaker Gymnasium in an NSIC conference match-up. The Golden Eagles played a physical first half against the Wildcats, in turn, it became one of the best first half performances of the year with UMC shooting 47.6% from the field. The difference in the score in the first half was the Wildcats forcing seven more turnovers which led to 10 more field goal attempts than the Golden Eagles. Katie Cheline (Fr. F, Mondovi, Wis.) had a season high five assist in the first half, which accounted for half of the teams 10 assist in the half. The score at the half was 41-27 with the Golden Eagles playing tough behind the Wildcats. In the second half, the turnovers continued to be costly for the Golden Eagles. The team committed 13 in the second half which resulted in 29 total points. Kelsey Van Ackeren (Fr. G, St. Cloud, Minn.) led the Golden Eagles with 13 total points, one block, and one assist. Brittany Milne (Jr., G, Glendive, Mont.) added nine points to the total against the Wildcats. The team finished with a field goal percentage of 36.2%. The Wildcats had five players in double digits scoring. Lauren Gustafson led the way with 19 points, three steals, two assists, and three rebounds. Gustafson was also 4-4 behind the three-point line. The loss puts the Golden Eagles at 0-19 overall and 0-10 in conference play, while Wayne State is 11-8 overall and 4-6 in NSIC play. Catch the Golden Eagles tomorrow night when they face off against the Southwest Minnesota State University Mustangs. The tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. immediately followed by the men playing the Mustangs at 8:00 p.m. at Lysaker Gymnasium.
(1/23/07)- Huskies Shoot Down Golden Eagles (St. Cloud, Minn.)- On an evening where neither team shot particularily well, it was the Huskies of St. Cloud State University who better than doubled-up on UMC from the field. For the game, SCSU shot 47.2% to UMC's 22.4% and the Huskies used the advantage to take an 87-46 victory. The Golden Eagles didn't have a player reach double figures in points scored in the game. Katie Cheline (Fr., F, Mondovi, Wis.) and Treasure Clemons (Fr., G, Minneapolis, Minn.) led UMC with nine points each. The Huskies used 30 turnover points, 38 points in the paint and 23 second chance points to tally three players with double-digit points in the game. Erika Quigley led all scorers with 18 points. Kayla Rengel and Jackie Carlson followed Quigley with 16 and 14 points respectively. The Golden Eagles drop to 0-18 overall and 0-9 in the NSIC. With the win, the Huskies move to 13-7 and 1-4 in the NCC. The Golden Eagle Women' Basketball team returns to Lysaker Gymnasium to January 26 and 27 to resume NSIC Conference play. The team plays Wayne State College on the 26 and Southwest Minnesota State on the 27. Both games are scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. tip-off.
(1/20/07)- Cold Shooting Leads to Golden Eagle Defeat (Crookston, Minn.) The Golden Eagle Women's Basketball team faced the Winona State University Warriors tonight in the second game of their weekend set. UMC shot under 30 percent from the field in route to a 64-45 defeat. The Golden Eagles came out in a zone defense which gave the Warriors problems and stunted there offense for much of the first half. In the first four minutes of the game the Golden Eagles jumped out to an 8-0 lead. Slowly, Winona State was able to adjust to the zone and take advantage of some mistakes made by UMC which the Warriors turned into easy buckets on the other end. Freshman forward Katie Cheline (Mondavi, Wis.) was well on her way to a double-double in the first half leading the way with six points and seven rebounds. At the end of the half the Golden Eagles trailed by only three points at 22-25 despite shooting poorly from the floor at 29.7%. The Warriors improved on their poor shooting in the first half shooting 52% in the second half while the Golden Eagles remained below 30% from the field shooting 29.6% for the half. Foul shooting was also a big reason the Warriors were able to build on their halftime lead. The Warriors were 12-15 from the line and the Golden Eagles were 6-7, but many of the foul shots came late in the game. The Golden Eagles played a solid defensive game, but in the end their inability to find the bottom of the bucket kept the team searching for their first win of the season. The loss puts the Golden Eagles record to 0-17 (0-9 NSIC) and the win improves the Warriors record to 11-6 (7-2 NSIC). Freshman Katie Cheline added another double-double to her young career with ten points and ten rebounds to lead the Golden Eagles. Winona State University was led by Jamie Majerowicz's 16 points and nine rebounds.
(1/19/07)- Golden Eagle Women fall short to Upper Iowa Peacocks (Crookston, Minn.) The Golden Eagle Women's basketball team lost a close one to the Upper Iowa Peacocks this evening in an NSIC conference showdown 49-40 at Lysaker Gymnasium. At the half, the Golden Eagles led the Peacocks 22-20. UMC shot 34.8% at the half and was 2-6 behind the three-point line. Katie Cheline (Fr., F, Mondovi, Wis.) was the leading scorer for the Golden Eagles with six points in the half. The Golden Eagles bench came through totaling nine points before the end of the half. The Golden Eagles had fewer turnovers and remained aggressive on defense in the second half Key offensive rebounds kept UMC alive until the last three minutes of the game when the Peacocks preciseness behind the three-point line was enough to lift them to a win over the Golden Eagles 49-40. Katie Cheline had seven points in the second half to give her a total of 13 points. Doriane Davis (Fr., F/G, Milwaukee, Wis.) had eight rebounds on the night which tied a career high for her. The Peacocks leading scorer on the evening was Andrea Downs who had 14 points. Paige Devine also added 11 points to Upper Iowa's total score. The Golden Eagles are now 0-16 on the season and 0-8 in the NSIC. Upper Iowa moves to 7-9 overall and 3-5 in the NSIC. (1/13/07)- Slow Start Downs Golden Eagles (Bismarck, N.D.)- The Golden Eagles continue to struggle to put a full 40 minutes together as the team shot 5-30 in the first half to go down 40-14 against the Marauders. UMC outscored Mary in the second half the deficit was too great as Mary rode out its lead for a 69-51 victory tonight. Despite the team's shooting woes, Kelsey Van Ackeren (Fr., G, St. Cloud, Minn.) and Katie Cheline (Fr., F, Mondovi, Wis.) continue to play solid for UMC. Van Ackeren finished with 14 points, going 4-9 from the field, 2-4 from long range and 4-6 from the charity stripe. Cheline finished the game with 12 points, going 4-7 from the field and a perfect 5-5 from the free-throw line. Mary's Corrie Villegan led all scorers with 19 points on the night. UMC is now 0-15 overall and 0-7 in the NSIC. Mary moves to 8-9 overall and 4-4 in the NSIC. The Golden Eagles host Upper Iowa and Winona State on January 19 and 20. Games on both nights are set for 6:00 p.m.
(1/12/07)- #22 Northern State Keeps Golden Eagles Winless (Aberdeen, S.D.)- Turnovers cost the Golden Eagles any momentum tonight as Northern State University jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, taking the NSIC conference game 85-48. The Golden Eagles would get no closer then 10 points in the game, as Northern State dominated the boards and forced UMC into 21 turnovers in the game, which the Wolves turned into 23 points on the night. UMC actually shot better then Northern State in the first half, but turnovers kept them from getting back into the game. The Golden Eagles cooled off considerably in the second half, making only six field goals and shooting 21% from the field. UMC's Kelsey Van Ackeren (Fr., G, St. Cloud, Minn.) led all scorers with 18 points, four rebounds and three assists. Doriane Davis (Fr., F, Milwaukee, Wis.) added 12 points for the Golden Eagles. Northern State was led by Noelle Hall's 15 points. UMC is now 0-14 overall and 0-6 in the NSIC. The #22 ranked Wolves are 12-4 overall and 5-2 in the Northern Sun Conference. UMC travels to Bismarck, N.D. tomorrow night to play the University of Mary. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
(1/6/07)- Golden Eagle Women Can't Get Shots to Drop, Lose To Beavers 69-56 (Crookston, Minn.)- The UMC Golden Eagle Women's Basketball team faced NSIC rival Bemidji State University tonight at Lysaker Gymnasium. The Golden Eagles shot 35 percent for the game which was not good enough as UMC fell to BSU 69-56. The Golden Eagles were led by a pair of freshman in the first half as forward Katie Cheline (Forward, Mondovi, Wis.) and Kelsey Van Ackeren (Guard, St. Cloud, Minn.) scored a combined 22 of the Golden Eagle's 29 first half points. Van Ackeren led the way with 12 points and Cheline added 10 points and five rebounds in the half. The Beavers bench came up big in the half out scoring the Golden Eagle's bench 14-1. At the end of the half the Beavers led the Golden Eagles by two points 31-29. In the second half the Golden Eagles continued to shoot the ball poorly and Bemidji State capitalized pushing their lead into the double digits for most of the half. The Beavers had 16 offensive rebounds for the game and out-rebounded the Golden Eagles by 14 total rebounds, which proved costly in the end. The Golden Eagles fell with the final score 69-54. Leading the way offensively for the Golden Eagles was Kelsey Van Ackeren with 15 points and Katie Cheline with 12 points and six rebounds. Bemidji State was led by Amy Lawson's 15 points. The loss puts the Golden Eagles record to 0-13 (0-5 NSIC) and Bemidji State University improves to 7-5 (4-1 NSIC) with the win. (12/30/06)- Golden Eagles Can't Hold Off Warriors (Turlock, Calif.)- The Golden Eagle Women's Basketball team closed out the Eva Schicke Memorial New Year's Classic with a strong showing against host California State, Stanislaus. Although the score did not go in the Golden Eagle's favor, falling 61-55, UMC carried an eight point lead into the final 10 minutes of the game. UMC had three players finish the game with double-digit points. Doriane Davis (Fr., F, Milwaukee, Wis.) led the Golden Eagles with 13 points. Kelsey Van Ackeren (Fr., G, St. Cloud, Minn.) and Katie Cheline (Fr., F, Mondovi, Wis.) both finished with 10 points each. Trissilyn Clayton (Jr., G, Chicago, Ill.) was one point and one rebound away from a double-double, closing out the game with nine of each. Lysandra Williams from CSUS led all scorers with 16 points in the game. The Golden Eagles return to the court on January 6 as the team hosts NSIC rival Bemidji State University at Lysaker Gymnasium. (12/29/06)- Turnovers Overwhelm Golden Eagles Twenty Golden Eagle turnovers led to 26 points for the Torros in tonight's 73-53 loss to California State, Dominguez Hills. UMC struggled offensively, shooting just 36.7% for the game, with Treasure Clemons (Fr., G, Minneapolis, Minn.) as the only Golden Eagle scoring more than 10 points in the contest. Clemons had the touch shooting 4-5 (80%) from the field and going 7-10 (70%) from the free-throw line for 15 points. Brigayle Iglehart and Jessica Liang both hit three three-pointers in the game and shot well form the field to lead all scorers with 18 points each. UMC continues the Eva Schicke Memorial New Year's Classic in Turlock, Calif. tomorrow as the team will face California State, Stanislaus at 7:30 p.m.
(12/16/06)- Bulldogs Overpower Golden Eagles (Duluth, Minn.)- The Bulldogs of Minnesota, Duluth moved their winning streak to eight games as they went on to defeat UMC tonight 71-50. Duluth would put the game out of reach early as they went on a 21-0 run to open the game's first 10 minutes. UMC would finish the half playing more consistently going into the break down by 17 at 35-18. UMC played a much more aggresive second half playing the Bulldogs to a 36-32 score. Kelsey Van Ackeren (Fr., G, St. Cloud, Minn.) led the Golden Eagles with 10 points on the night. Doriane Davis (Fr., F, Milwaukee, Wis.) led UMC on the boards with eight. UMD was led offensively by Katie Winkelman and Justine Axtell who scored 13 points each. UMC is 0-10 overall on the season. The team now travels to California for a tournament in Turlock, Calif. UMC plays Cal. State-Stanislaus on December 29 at 7:30 p.m. and Cal. State-Dominguez Hills on December 30 at 5:30 p.m.
(12/13/06)- Golden Eagles Can't Stop #5 North Dakota (Grand Forks, ND)- The Golden Eagle Women's Basketball team opened the game playing a solid first 10 minutes and holding the Fighting Sioux in check 24-21. As the first half wound down, UND wore UMC down and used power basketball to go on a 20-7 run to end the half up 44-28. In the second half, the shooting percentage fell for UMC and the size of UND took over. North Dakota would go on to out rebound UMC by 28 (54-26) en route to a 89-51 victory for the Fighting Sioux. UMC's Trissilyn Clayton (Jr., G, Chicago, Ill.) led all scorers tallying 22 points on the night. Treasure Clemons (Fr., G, Minneapolis, Minn.) and Rose Vigness (So., F, Nielsville, Minn.) each scored a season high in points with eight and six respectively. UND was led by Kiarah Kimbrough's 17 points. The Golden Eagles travel to the U of M, Duluth on December 16 to take on the Bulldogs in non-conference action. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
(12/9/06)- Golden Eagle Turnovers Costly in Loss To Golden Bears (Crookston, Minn.) The Golden Eagle Women's Basketball team fell to a tough Concordia St. Paul Golden Bears team tonight at Lysaker Gymnasium 77-52 in NSIC Conference play. The Golden Eagles came out and battled Concordia St. Paul Golden Bears for the first ten minutes, but committed too many turnovers in the first half with 14 and fell behind by 18 at the break 37-19. Leading the Golden Eagles in scoring for the half was Trissilyn Clayton (Jr., G, Chicago, Ill.) with six points. In the second half the Golden Bears size started to take over as they grabbed a number of offensive rebounds and their three pointers began to drop. The Golden Bears out rebounded the Golden Eagles by 20, 42-22 which was a huge difference in the game as Concordia scored 22 second chance points to UMC's three. The Golden Bears pushed their lead to as many as 25 points, but the Golden Eagles clawed back with some deep three's by Jackie Artise (So., G, Northeast, Penn.). The final score ended with the Golden Bears winning by a score of 77-52. The Golden Eagles were led in the game by Trissilyn Clayton's 11 points. Doriane Davis (Fr., G, Milwaukee, Wis.) added nine points and three assists. The Golden Bears were led by a very solid all around performance by guard Katie LaViollette who finished the game with a double-double 16 points and 10 assists. (12/8/06)- Dragons Wear Down Golden Eagles in Second Half (Crookston, Minn.) The Golden Eagle Women's Basketball team fell to a physical Minnesota State Moorhead team tonight at Lysaker Gymnasium. The Golden Eagles played a strong first half slowing the bigger Dragons team down with solid full court pressure. The Golden Eagles held the Dragons to just 25% shooting from the field in the half. The first half ended with the Golden Eagles heading into locker room on top of the Dragons 27-24 in a low scoring half. Freshman Katie Cheline (F, Mondovi, Wis.) had a strong half in the paint against much taller defenders scoring seven points in the half. In the second half the Dragons came out of the gates strong gaining the lead one minute into the second session. That is where they remained as they continued to push their lead into double digits during the half. The Dragons went on to win by a final score of 70-57. Doriane Davis (Fr., G, Milwaukee, Wis.) came off the bench in the second half and took on most of the scoring load for the Golden Eagles as she finished the game with 18 points. In the end the bigger post players took over on the glass for the Dragons winning the rebound battle by 10, 48-38. The loss puts the Golden Eagles record to 0-7 (0-3 NSIC) and the win improves the Dragons record to 5-3 (1-1 NSIC). Freshman Katie Cheline came two rebounds shy of posting another double-double, she finished the game 13 pints and eight rebounds. (12/2/06)- Hot First Half Shooting Lifts Wildcats Past Golden Eagles (Wayne, Neb.) The Golden Eagles battled a very talented Wayne State College tonight but could not get past the strong Wildcats as WSC defeated UMC 79-47. Trissilyn Clayton (Jr., G, Chicago, Ill.) had an outstanding night, setting a season high with five three-pointers on eight attempts, with a shooting percentage of .625. She was also 10-18 from the field, ending the night with a game high of 26 total points. Doriane Davis (Fr., F/G, Milwaukee, Wis.) led the Golden Eagles in rebounds with four and added six points on the night. The Golden Eagles as a team were 18-52 in field goals, and 8-19 in three point attempts. The Wildcat's Andrea Schoepf scored 18 of her 23 points in the first half and made seven three pointers. Kylee McGill and Teresa Case each had nine rebounds in the game with McGill scoring eight points and Case ending the evening with seven. The loss puts the Golden Eagles at 0-6 overall and 0-2 in the NSIC. Wayne State moves to 5-1 overall and 1-1 in the NSIC. (12/1/06)- Mustangs Capitalize on Slow Golden Eagle Second Half (Marshall, Minn.) The Golden Eagle Women's Basketball team lost a tough game to the Mustangs Friday night 62-42 in front of more than 1,000 fans at Southwest Minnesota State University. This game was the NSIC opener for both teams for the 2006 season, in which both sides enjoyed game highs. Katie Cheline (Fr., F, Mondovi, Wis.) had a season high field goal percentage as she was 6-10 for 60 percent from the field for 15 points. Theresa Crance (Jr., F/C, Timber Lake, S.D.) tied the season record with two blocked shots. She was also the leading rebounder for the Golden Eagles, having five defensive rebounds and one offensive for a total of six. Southwest Minnesota State's Kady Telschow earned her first career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Megan Wittkop helped the Mustangs by bringing in 12 total points for the evening. The loss sends the Golden Eagles to 0-5 and 0-1 in the NSIC. SMSU moves to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play. The Golden Eagle's next game is December 2nd in Nebraska versus Wayne State College at 6:00 p.m.
(11/27/06)- Valley City Holds Off Golden Eagle Comeback The Golden Eagle Women's Basketball team traveled to Valley City tonight to take on a tough Valley City State Vikings squad. The Golden Eagles could not come away with a road win losing 50-64. The Golden Eagle women opened the game a little slow offensively but were able to force the Vikings into 19 turnovers while only giving up 11. In the end the game came down to shooting and rebounding as the Vikings shot 48.9 percent from the field while the Golden Eagles shot 29.8 percent. The Vikings out rebounded the Golden Eagles by ten 41-31. Leading the way for the Golden Eagles was freshman Kelsey Van Ackeren (Fr., G, St. Cloud, Minn.) with 16 points, four rebounds and two steals. The Vikings had three players scoring in double figures led by Loni Hall's 18 points. The loss drops the Golden Eagles record to 0-4 and the win brings the Vikings record to 5-1. UMC is on the road on December 1 and 2 to open NSIC Conference play. The Golden Eagles travel to Marshall, Minn. to take on the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State University at 6:00 p.m. on December 1. The team then travels to Wayne State (NE) on December 2 to take on the Wildcats at 6:00 p.m. UMC returns home on December 8 and 9 as the team hosts MSU-Moorhead and Concordia- St. Paul.
(11/25/06)- Golden Eagle Women Lose a Close One to Mayville State (Crookston, Minn.) The Golden Eagle Women's Basketball team lost a close one to the Mayville State Comets this afternoon in their first home game of the season at Lysaker Gymnasium. The Golden Eagle's shots were not dropping in the first half as they shot 25% from the field. Trissilyn Clayton (Jr., G, Chicago, Ill.) led the Golden Eagles with five first half points and two steals. The full court zone press forced the comets into ten turnovers in the first half. At the end of the half the Golden Eagles trailed by twelve 30-18. In the second half the Comets came out on fire hitting clutch three-pointers against the zone defense and pushed their lead to twenty points. The Golden Eagles never gave up as they stepped up their aggressiveness on the defensive end and forced the Comets into turnovers that led to easy buckets. Katie Cheline (Fr., F, Mondovi, Wis.) came off the bench to help spark the comeback hitting the boards and finishing buckets on the offensive end. She finished the game with a double-double. The score was within two points with thirty seconds remaining, but the Comets hit some clutch free-throws down the stretch and pulled out the win 68-62. Freshman Katie Cheline had her first career double-double as she led the Golden Eagles with fourteen points and eleven rebounds. Trissilyn Clayton chipped in 13 points, four assists and two steals. The Mayville State Comets were led by Michelle Halvorson's 15 points, five assists and three steals. The loss drops the Golden Eagles to 0-3 on the season and with the win the Comets move to 6-2. (11/18/06)- Golden Eagles Shoot Poorly in Loss to Vikings This afternoon the Golden Eagle Women's Basketball team played their second game in the Pepsi Tip-Off Classic in Mankato, Minn. against the Augustana College. UMC fell 63-50 to the Vikings. The Golden Eagle's had trouble putting the ball in the basket today shooting 31 percent from the field. They were able to stay in the game with solid defense which held Augastana College to a similar 31.1 shooting percentage. At halftime the Golden Eagles only trailed by three points, but in the second half the Vikings shot a little better and pulled the game out winning by 13 points 63-50. The Golden Eagles were led by Katie Cheline's (Fr., F, Mondovi, Wis.) 13 points, seven rebounds and two blocks. Two sport athlete Theresa Crance (Jr., C, Timber Lake, S.D.), who also plays volleyball for the Golden Eagles, did a good job on the boards grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds. UMC is now 0-2 on the season as Augustana moves to 4-2. The Golden Eagles return to action November 25 against Mayville State in their home opener at Lysaker Gymnasium. (11/17/06)- Golden Eagles Drop First Game of Pepsi Tip-Off Classic The Golden Eagle Women's Basketball team lost their first regular season game of the year at the Pepsi Tip-Off Classic to host MSU-Mankato 89-45. The major difference in the game was the Golden Eagles were outscored in the paint 44-4 and gave up 37 fast break points compared to their 12 fast break points. MSU-Mankato shot a red hot 61.1% from the field in the first half taking a halftime lead of 53-23. In the second half the Golden Eagles stepped up their defensive play, but it was too late. The final score ended Mankato State 89 the Golden Eagles 45. The Golden Eagles were led by freshman Kelsey Van Ackeren's (G, St. Cloud, Minn.) game-high 18 points and Jackie Artise's (So., G, Northeast, Pa.) 9 points. Mankato State balanced attack was led by Liz Trauger's 17 points. The loss drops the Golden Eagle Women's record to 0-1 and Mankato State moves to 1-0 with the win. (11/5/06)- Gophers Defeat Golden Eagles in Final Exhibition Game Head Golden Eagle Women's Basketball Coach Mike Roysland faced off against his daughter Kelly this afternoon as UMC traveled to Minneapolis to play an exhibition game with the Gophers in front of almost 4,500 fans. Minnesota went on to defeat UMC 86-47. The Golden Eagles shot almost as well as the Gophers from the field 38% to 42%. However, UMC turnovers and Gopher rebounding put Minnesota in the drivers seat. UMC finished the game turning the ball over 36 times and Minnesota grabbed 25 offensive rebounds to UMC's eight. Kelly Roysland led all scorers with 19 points. UMC was led again by Kelsey Van Ackeren (Jr., G, St. Cloud, MN) and Trissilyn Clayton (Jr., G, Chicago, IL). Van Ackeren finished the game with 13 points and four assists. UMC will open its regualr season on November 17 and 18 as the team travels to MSU-Mankato for the Mankato Tip-Off Tournament. The Golden Eagles play Mankato on the 17 at 6:00 p.m. and Augustana on the 18 at 1:00 p.m.
(11/3/05)- Golden Eagles Drop Exhibition Opener UMC struggled in it 2006-2007 exhibition opener against South Dakota State University, falling to the Jackrabbits 107-45. SDSU shot 47.2% for the game and put up 52 and 55 points in each half. UMC shot just 25.5% from the field in the game. UMC was led by Trissilyn Clayton (Jr., G, Chicago, IL) who scored 18 points in the game going 6-19 from the field and 4-11 from beyond the three-point line. Kelsey Van Ackeren (Fr., G, St. Cloud, MN) was the only other Golden Eagle that scored in double digits as she finished with 11 points on the night. The Golden Eagles travel to the University of Minnesota on Sunday to take on the Gophers in the team's final exhibition game of the season. (8/29/06)- Golden Eagle Women's Basketball Signs (Crookston, Minn.)- Head Golden Eagle Women's Basketball Coach Mike Roysland announced today the signing of Jackie Artise from North East, PA. Artise is a 5'5 shooting guard from Point Park University where she played basketball for one season. In high school, Artise earned numerous accolades for her outstanding play. She was a four year All-County Selection, a four time Barringer Tournament MVP, a Keystone three-point champion and a 1,000+ point scorer. In 2004, her team was the District X Champions and she capped off her high school career by being named the Most Outstanding School Athlete of 2005. "Jackie is a true outside shooting threat. She comes from a coaching family and it shows tremendously in her work ethic, passion and knowledge of the game," says Head Coach Mike Roysland. "We look for her to step in and help lead this year's team." Artise is majoring in Sport & Recreation Management at UMC. She is the daughter of Pat and Tracy Artise. (8/9/06)- Golden Eagle Women's Basketball Signs (Crookston, Minn.)- The Golden Eagle Women's Basketball Program announced today the signing of Rebekah Fitzgerald from Faribault, MN. Fitzgerald is a 6'0 forward from Rochester Community and Technical College (RCTC). In her two-year career at RCTC Fitzgerald was named an All-MCCC athlete (2 years) and an All-Region athlete (2 years). She also earned distinction as a team captain, an All-American Honorable Mention and the Offensive Player of the Year. Fitzgerald was a three sport athlete in high school and earned recognition on the court as a team captain and MVP and an All-State All-Star. She scored over 1,000 points in three years and was named to the All-Big 9 Conference Team three straight years. "We are thrilled to have Bekah become a part of our Women's Basketball Program. Her athletic ability and versatility will be major assets to our program. Bekah's experience at the collegiate level and her leadership ability both on and off the court is something the younger players will be able to learn from," says Head Women's Basketball Coach Mike Roysland. Fitzgerald is majoring in Sport and Recreation Management at UMC. She is the daughter of Mark and Lydia Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald will also be playing volleyball for the Golden Eagles this fall.
(8/3/06)- Golden Eagle Women's Basketball Signs (Crookston, Minn.)- The Golden Eagle Women's Basketball Program announced today the signing of Treasure Clemons from Minneapolis, MN. "Treasure's speed and quickness to defend along with her ability to finish in the open court will be an asset to this year's team," says Head Coach Mike Roysland. "Her pleasant personality was very evident during her visit to UMC and is a welcomed addition to the team." Clemons is undeclared in a major at UMC. She is the daughter of Nina and Demetrius Clemons. (7/17/06)- WBCA Honors "Class"Act Teams Atlanta, Ga. -- The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced its 2005-2006 Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll for NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA and Junior College/Community College. The awards recognize teams throughout the nation that have the highest grade point averages (GPA) for the 2005-2006 season based upon nominations submitted by WBCA-member coaches. The Golden Eagles finished 23rd overall in Division II with a 3.327 grade point average for the academic year. (6/22/06)- Golden Eagle Athletics Rehires Abby Hearn (Crookston, Minn.)- University of Minnesota, Crookston Director of Athletics, Stephanie Helgeson, announced today that Abby Hearn has been rehired in the UMC Athletic Department. Hearn served as the Head Women's Tennis Coach and Assistant Women's Basketball Coach at the University of Minnesota, Crookston last season. This year she will be the Assistant Women's Basketball Coach and take on a new role as the Head Women's Golf Coach. She was considered an emergency hire for the 2005-2006 season and reapplied for the position. Prior to her position at UMC, Hearn was an Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach at Ohio University located in Athens, OH. While at Ohio, she worked with several "Bobcat" sports teams on strength, cardiovascular fitness, agility and flexibility. From 2002-2004 Hearn was an Assistant Women's Basketball Coach at Minnesota State-Moorhead. She was involved in all facets of the program at MSUM including game day preparation, film exchange and recruiting and scouting. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education with a minor in coaching from the University of North Dakota. She went on to earn her Master's of Science Degree in Physical Education from North Dakota State University. "I am thrilled to be back at UMC and I am elated about the upcoming year," says Hearn. "Taking over the Women's Golf program is a great opportunity for me, and I am absolutely looking forward to working with, and learning from Coach Roysland." (6/7/06)- Mike Roysland (Fosston, MN) Named Head Women's Basketball Coach at UMC (Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston announced today that Mike Roysland from Fosston, MN has been named Head Women's Basketball Coach at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. Roysland brings 42 combined years of head coaching experience to the Golden Eagle Women's Basketball program. He coached girl's volleyball for 15 years at Win-E-Mac and finished with a record of 364 wins and 51 losses. Roysland was the head boy's basketball coach for a combined 27 years at Win-E-Mac and Fosston and finished with a record of 360 wins and 237 losses. He was a Co-Coach on a North Tartan AAU team that took third place at Nationals in 2002 and won the National Championship in 2003. "I am very excited about the possibilities that can take place at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. I look forward to moving the Golden Eagle Women's Basketball program in a direction that the student-athletes, University and Community can be proud of," says Roysland. Prior to his position at UMC, Roysland was the Physical Education teacher at Fosston High School. Other teaching experiences include developing a reading program for 1st grade students in Northwest Minnesota that was sponsored by Garden Valley Telephone Company and Wild Rice Electric Cooperative, Title 1 Director at Fosston Magelssen/Elementary - Reading and Math and developed a nation-wide drug education program for grades 4-6 that was sponsored by the National Football League (NFL). Roysland was also a Physical Education teacher at Win-E-Mac High School from 1980-2001. Roysland earned recognition during his 20+ years in education. He is a four year Executive Board Member of the Minnesota Boys Basketball Coaches Association, 2000 basketball State Runner-Up and Conference and Sub-Section Basketball Coach of the year. In volleyball, he received the Minnesota State Coaches Association Hall of Fame Award, is a three-time State Coach of the Year and made eight State Tournament appearances. "I feel confident in his ability, he has coached and taught for the last 27 years in this region and is very well known across the state of Minnesota. I am very excited to have someone of his energy and enthusiasm joining our staff; he is a team player and brings a lot not only to our women's basketball program but athletic program as a whole," says Stephanie Helgeson, Director of Athletics." "He is a very driven person, I think he will work hard at recruiting and expect a lot out of his student-athletes but in return he will provide the student-athletes with a great experience which is a priority for our program," Helgeson adds. (5/18/06)- Golden Eagle Women's Basketball Signs Brittany Milne (Glendive, MT) (Crookston, Minn.)- Head Women's Basketball Coach Sheila Roux announced today that Brittany Milne has signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball for the Golden Eagles next season. Milne is a 5'6" point guard/shooting guard from Olympic College in Bremerton, Washington. At Olympic College Milne averaged 12.2 points/game, 4.5 assists/game (1st on team) and 2.1 steals/game (1st on team). She was named to the Shoreline Turkey Shootout All-Star Team. Milne was the team captain for the 2005-06 season and earned a spot on the All-Academic team. At Dawson County High School she was named to the All-Conference 2nd Team (02-03) and All-Conference 1st Team (03-04). In 2003 she was designated as a team captain and was a three-time Head & Heart Award Recipient. Coach Roux says, "Brittany is a tremendous passer and gives us another very smart guard at the 1 and 2 positions. She is a true gym rat whose work ethic is second to none. She will bring experience and great leadership to our team and that is something we are excited about."

She is one of the most athletic kids I have seen in a long time and think she will be a huge part of what we are trying to do here at UMC. She is crafty with the ball and has a great knack for rebounding as a guard. The combination of her athleticism and experience was just what we were looking for in a wing player and we couldn't be happier that she has chosen UMC." Clayton plans to major in Sport & Recreation Management at UMC. She is the daughter of David and Deborah Clayton. Amanda Bethke is a 5'5 point guard from Buffalo High School. As a senior, she was named Team MVP and All-Conference Honorable Mention for the Mississippi Conference. Coach Roux says, "I am very excited that Amanda has decided to become a Golden Eagle. She will bring a great attitude and work ethic to our team. (4/17/06)- Five Sign Letters of Intent with Golden Eagle Women's Basketball Jessica Brown, Whitney Coffield, Kelsey VanAckeren, Doriane Davis and Aubrey Parsons have all signed National Letters of Intent to play for the Golden Eagles during the 2006-2007 basketball season. Jessica Brown is a 6'5", center out of J.A. Craig High School. As a senior in 2005-06, Brown was named Team Captain and was also named player of the week. In her sophomore season she was name the team's most improved player. Coach Roux says, "Jessica has improved leaps and bounds over the past couple years and really burst onto the recruiting scene with her AAU play this past summer. She brings a new dimension to our team with her size and strength. At 6'5" she will allow us to do things defensively that we weren't able to do last year. She played AAU basketball with early signee, Katie Cheline, for the Viking Club's Team Wisconsin and we see nothing but a huge upside for Jess. We welcome her with open arms to UMC." Brown's major is undeclared at UMC. She is the daughter Mary Brown of Janesville, WI and Thomas Brown of Shreveport, LA. Whitney Coffield is a 5'4", guard out of Lancaster Public High School. As a senior in 2005-06, Coffield was named All-Conference and to the All-Tournament team in the Christmas Tournament. She was also All-Conference in her sophomore and junior seasons, while being named to the All-Tournament team at the Christmas Tournament as a freshman and sophomore. Coach Roux says, "Whitney Coffield is a kid that I am very excited has decided to become a Golden Eagle. She will bring a great attitude and work ethic to our team." Doriane Davis is a 5'9", guard/forward out of Harold Vincent High School. Kelsey VanAckeren is a 5'9", guard out of St. Cloud Apollo High School. As a senior in 2005-06, VanAckeren was named All-Conference, All-Area Honorable Mention, and All-State Honorable Mention, along with being the leading scorer and rebounder in her conference. As a junior she was named All-Conference and All-Area Honorable Mention and was Honorable Mention All-Conference as a sophomore. In her four year career she scored 986 points. VanAckeren plans to major in Pre-Physical Therapy at UMC. She is the daughter of Rob and Cindie VanAckeren of St. Cloud, MN. (3/8/06)- Kari Score & Karna Plaine Named All-North Central Region Second Team (Marshall, Minn.)- Daktronics, Inc. released its 2006 Women's Basketball All-North Central Region Teams today. Golden Eagle's Kari Score and Karna Plaine were named to the All-North Central Region Second Team. The squad is selected by North Central Region members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Kari Score (Jr., Forward/Center, Boyceville, WI) amassed 13 double-doubles this season. She led the Golden Eagles in points/game (17.6), field goals made (173), field goal% (.536) and three-point% (.452). Defensively she was just as dominant, blocking 17 shots and grabbing 266 rebounds (92 offensive, 174 defensive). Score was first overall in the NSIC in scoring (493 points) and rebounding (266) (9.5 rebounds/game). Nationally Score ranked 39th in points/game, 41st in rebounds/game and 33rd in field goal% in NCAA Division II basketball. Kari Score is the daughter of David and Mary Score and is majoring in Early Childhood Education at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. Karna Plaine (Sr., Forward, Hatton, ND) closed out her Golden Eagle career as the schools all-time leading scorer (1,642 points). She led the team in free-throw% (.779) and was second in points/game (17.4), rebounds (151) and assists (65). Plaine was second in the NSIC in scoring (486) and ranked 35th nationally in points/game. She was recognized as an All-Conference Honorable Mention after the 2003-04 season and an All-Conference 1st Team member after the 2004-05 season. Karna Plaine is the daughter of Kirby and Susan Plaine and will graduate this spring with a Health Science degree (Pre-Professional) from the University of Minnesota, Crookston. Both Kari and Karna received NSIC Player-of-the-Week Honors three times this season. (National rankings as of 2/26/06.) (3/2/06)- Kari Score & Karna Plaine Named NSIC All-Conference Second Team (St. Paul, Minn.)- The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) has announced its 2005-06 Women's Basketball All-Conference teams and has awarded winners as voted on by the league coaches. University of Minnesota, Crookston team members Kari Score and Karna Plaine were named to the NSIC All-Conference Second team.

Trissilyn Clayton is a 5'8 shooting guard from Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, CO. During her senior campaign in high school, she averaged 21 points and nine rebounds per game and was named an All-City athlete. Last season at Northeastern she led her team in 3-point field goals made while averaging nine points and six rebounds per game.
