1st Period 2nd Period Over Time
The Golden Eagle Hockey team came into the championship weekend riding a couple of huge wins over Lawrence University in the semi-finals. The first game of the championship series started out slow and controlled as both teams tried not to make a mistake early. At about the six minute mark of the first period, MSOE made the first mistake of the game as Matt Fastelin took an interference penalty. A little over a minute into the powerplay, senior, captain Brock Anundson (Marc Tveit) beat MSOE goaltender Matt Burzon to take a 1-0 leada. UMC's Matt Hann would then take a tripping penalty at the 13 minutes mark and MSOE would capitalize as Michael Duta (Blair Hanberg, Jason Martin) beat Jaden Isakson to tie the game at one goal a piece after one period. Three goals were scored in the second period, all on powerplays. For the game, all five goals were allowed on power plays. UMC's Theran Bauer was called for interference with under a minute to play in the first. MSOE started the second period a man up on UMC and would quickly take advantage as James Shipley (Jacob Basket Jr., Brian Soik) put the Raiders up by one goals just 48 seconds into the second period. UMC would respond half way through the second period as Lee Swallow took a slashing penalty for MSOE. 30 seconds into the powerplay Kurtis Dukelow would bury his ninth goal of the season (Brock Anundson, Shawn Carlson). MSOE's Ross Chawanski would prove to score the game winner with under five minutes to go in the second period after UMC's Brent Groenke was called for hooking. The third period saw eight combined penalties but neither team could capitalize as UMC dropped the first game of the series 2-3. The teams face off tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. UMC needs to win both the regular game and the mini-game to three-peat as MCHA Champions.

(2/23/05)- Knutson Named USCHO/ITECH Division III Men's Players of the Week After dropping Friday's quarterfinal game to Lawrence, 3-2, Minnesota-Crookston needed both a win and a mini-game win to advance to the MCHA finals. Forward Patrick Knutson would prove to be the hero. The Junior from East Grand Forks, Minn., scored a Hat Trick on Saturday against Lawrence including the winning goal just 22 seconds into overtime. Knutson then scored the lone goal in overtime of the mini-game to advance coach Gary Warren's Golden Eagles to this weekend's Harris Cup. The championship series will take place this weekend in Milwaukee, WI as MSOE is the higher seed. Game times are scheduled for 7:05 p.m. on Friday, February 25th and 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 26th. The Golden Eagles won the Harris Cup in 2002-2003 and 2003-2004. This is the team's third straight opportunity at the MCHA title.
(2/22/05)- Golden Eagles Looking to Three-Peat The University of Minnesota, Crookston Golden Eagle Hockey team beat Lawrence University in dramatic fashion to advance to the MCHA Championship series. UMC will do battle with Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) this weekend for the Harris Cup. After losing the first game last weekend, the Golden Eagles defeated the Lawrence Vikings just 22 seconds into overtime of the second game. The team then went on to win the mini-game in sudden death overtime to advance to the championship and a chance to three-peat as MCHA Champions. The championship series will take place this weekend in Milwaukee, WI as MSOE is the higher seed. (2/21/05)- Knutson Leads Golden Eagles to Championship Series East Grand Forks, MN native, Patrick Knutson had a career game for the Golden Eagle hockey team as they set their sights on the MCHA Championship. In Saturday's must win game against Lawrence University, Knutson recorded his 21st and 22nd goals of the season. But, with time winding down and the Golden Eagles down by one, Head Coach Gary Warren had no other option but to pull goaltender Jaden Isakson for an extra attacker. At the 19:20 mark of the third period, senior Kurtis Dukelow scored the biggest goal of his career to send the game to extra sessions. The momentum would carry over for the Golden Eagles. Just 22 seconds into overtime, Knutson would score what he thought was the biggest goal of his career as he completed the hat-trick and sent the teams into a mini-game series tie-breaker. The first 20 minute session of the mini-game saw no scoring, so by rule, the next 20 minutes would become sudden death to decide who goes home and who moves on to play for the MCHA Championship. It was during sudden death that Knutson once again rose to the occasion for the Golden Eagles and scored the game winning goal that would send UMC on to face Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) and a chance to three-peat as MCHA Champions. The team now travels to Milwaukee, WI to battle MSOE for the 2004-05 MCHA Championship. Game times are scheduled for 7:05 p.m. on Friday, February 25th and 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 26th.

The team had nothing to lose and they played like it. UMC was down early as LU's Pete Mossberg scored just 1:17 into the game. The Golden Eagles persevered and scored two unanswered goals in the first to take a one goal lead until LU scored with just over a minute left in the period. UMC only scored one goal in the second as Patrick Knutson scored his second goal of the game at 8:24. The team went into the third period down by a goal with their season on the line. The outlook didn't look good for UMC as they watch the time tick away down by one. Then with 40 seconds left in regulation and goaltender Jaden Isakson on the bench for an extra attacker, Senior Kurtis Dukelow beat LU's goaltender Andrew Isaac for possibly the biggest goal of his career extending the Golden Eagle hockey season to at least a sudden death overtime period. Just 22 seconds into overtime Junior Patrick Knutson complteted his hat-trick and scored possibly the biggest goal of his career to give the Golden Eagles a 5-4 overtime victory to force the mini-game tie-breaker.

The scoring began early in the second period as Brad Barton beat UMC's goalie Jaden Isakson at 2:10 of the period. The Vikings took a two goal lead just three minutes later as Mason Oakes found the back of the net. It would be almost 10 minutes before the scoring would pick up again as three goals were scored in under four minutes. UMC's Nate Haskins got the Golden Eagles on the board on a powerplay goal, assisted by Shawn Carlson and Kurtis Dukelow. Lawrence once again responded under two minutes later as Joe Searl scored for the Vikings. The Golden Eagles kept battling and with under two minutes to go in the second period, Theran Bauer scored a big short handed goal to get UMC back within one. Brock Anundson led the charge all season for the Golden Eagles, and tonight would be no different. Anundson opened up the scoring early in the first period with a power play goal after just two and a half minutes of play. Theran Bauer and Teal Plaine would also add goals in the period as UMC took a 3-0 lead and never looked back. Defenseman Nate Haskins would have two assists in the first period and would also play a major role in a defense that only allowed four Northland shots in the first 20 minutes. The second period would be much more closely contested as the two teams skated to a 1-1 tie in the period. Before the Lumberjacks would find the net however, Brock Anundson would score his second power play goal of the game. In the third period Kurtis Dukelow would add to the scoring with his goal at 10:35. Anundson would get the assist on the goal for his third point of the game. Northland's Jim Junker would add a power play goal for his team, but it would be far from enough to stop the red hot Golden Eagles. In a desperate effort to get back in the game, Northland would pull their goalie, but UMC's Andy Johnson was able to get a shot off and the puck found its way to the back of the net to put the icing on the cake for the Golden Eagles. With the win this afternoon, UMC can wrap up the first round of the playoffs with a win tomorrow.
