(2/3/06)- 2005-06 Season Comes to an End for Golden Eagles Just like the injuries the team endured this season, the Golden Eagle Hockey team brought its "Never Quit" attitude into the game against Lawrence University in the first round of the MCHA Playoffs. Down 3-0 five minutes into the second period, Matt Hann used his unassisted powerplay goal to spark a little life into his team. Just four minutes into the third period senior Patrick Knutson would get UMC within one goal as the Golden Eagles looked to make a run. Unfortunately, within three minutes the Vikings had found the back of UMC's net three times to take a 6-2 lead. UMC would again rally late as Andy Johnson and Ryan Leadens beat the Lawrence goalie. Those two goals would be the last for either team as Lawrence University outlasted UMC 6-4 to move on to the second round of the MCHA Playoffs. UMC finished the season 6-18-2.

(2/18/06)- Golden Eagles Can't Sweep In Final Series (Crookston, Minn.) - In the final game of the regular season the Golden Eagles Hockey team missed the sweep of Northland College falling 7-4 in Ashland, WI. Northland's Aaron Wallace scored the first of his four goals at the 1:38 mark of the first period to give the home team the early lead. The Golden Eagles answered back when Andy Johnson found the net five minutes later. Northland would score again to go up 2-1. The score would remain there as the first period ran out. In the second Northland extended their lead with a pair of goals before the Golden Eagled got back on the board. When they did it was Wyatt LaVigne on assists from Andy Johnson and Brent Groenke. It looked as if the game would head into the final period with the 4-2 score, in the final minute of the second each team was able to find the net again. First it was Northland going up by another goal, but the Golden Eagles Teal Plaine answered right back scoring a short handed goal with just 15 seconds remaining in the period. After two the Golden Eagles were down at 5-3. Northland struck quickly in the third scoring under two minutes into the period, but Wyatt LaVigne scored his second goal of the game to answer back. UMC would not be able to score again and Northland scored an empty net goal in the final seconds as the game finished with the score of 7-4. With the loss UMC is now 6-17-2 on the season and 6-13-1 in the MCHA while Northland is now 3-22-0 on the year. The Golden Eagles begin the MCHA tournament next weekend in Appleton, WI.

(2/17/06)- Golden Eagles Get Back On Winning Track (Crookston, Minn.) - The Golden Eagles got back in the win column today as they topped Northland College on the road 3-2 in the first game of the weekend series. Northland got on the board first when Nathan Dolentz scored midway through the first period. The Golden Eagles would even the score when senior captain Dustin Steigauf scored with five minutes left in the first session. The Golden Eagles would go into the first intermission tied at one apiece. In the second period UMC would take control and score two goals to take away the game. Brett Miller would put the Golden Eagles ahead when he put the puck past the Northland goalie less than two minutes into the period. Shortly after that Dustin Steigauf would score the game winner on his second goal of the game at the 2:20 mark of the second period. Northland would find the net again to go into the final period down a goal at 3-2. In the third period neither team would score as the teams skated to the 3-2 final. The Golden Eagle defense would eliminate all chances of a Northland comeback as the Lumberjacks got only 10 shots in the third period. Golden Eagle goalie Brett Shelanski made 23 saves in the game to preserve the victory.

(2/13/06)- Teal Plaine Earns MCHA Player of the Week Honors -Minnesota-Crookston Golden Eagle sophomore forward Teal Plaine (Hallock, Minn.) is this week's MCHA Player-of-the-Week. The accounting major had the hat trick on Friday and also an assist, helping account for four of his team's five goals in the 5-4 win. On Sunday, he scored another goal to finish with five points on the weekend. Other Nominees: Evan Thornton (Lawrence), Joe Lewis (Finlandia), Blair Hanberg (MSOE).
(2/12/06)- Golden Eagles Drop Penalty Plagued Game to Finlandia (Crookston, Minn.) - In a game that saw 30 combined penalties and over 80 combined penalty minutes, the final score was the same as the evening before, but this time it was the Lions of Finlandia University coming out on the top end of the 5-4 score against the University of Minnesota, Crookston. Finlandia would score early in the first period when Josh Paquette beat UMC goalie Jaden Isakson. The Golden Eagles would answer back, scoring the next three goals before the period expired. Billy Becker scored first for UMC at the midway point of the first period to even the score at one apiece. Teal Plaine followed up his hat trick last night with another goal tonight as he put the Golden Eagles ahead shortly after Becker's goal. In his final home game as a Golden Eagle Patrick Knutson would put UMC up 3-1 with the first of his two goals on the night. Finlandia and UMC would trade goals in the second period when Joe Lewis scored the first of his three on the afternoon for the Lions and Patrick Knutson scored his second of the game. In the second period there were a combined 12 penalties and 48 penalty minutes. The period also saw three 10 minute misconducts as the play began to get "chippy". The referees were forced to send the players to the box before things got out of hand. Heading into the final period the Golden Eagles held the one goal advantage at 4-3. Finlandia out shot UMC 14-6 in the final period, and those shots led to two third period goals for the Lions as they regained the lead for the first time since the first period. UMC would pull Isakson with under a minute to go but more penalties negated the Golden Eagles having the man advantage. A pair of Patrick Knutson shots missed the net as time expired and UMC had to settle for the series split. With the loss UMC is now 5-16-2 on the season and 5-12-1 in the MCHA while Finlandia is now 8-11-3 on the year and 8-7-3 in conference play. The Golden Eagles close out the regular season next weekend on the road in Ashland, WI for a two game set with Northland College.

(2/11/06)- Teal Plaine Hat-Trick Leads UMC to Victory (Crookston, Minn.) - As the Golden Eagle hockey team returned to Crookston for their final home series of the season, they looked to end on a high note. They did just that this evening beating the visiting Finlandia University Lions 5-4 in the series opener. The Golden Eagles didn't waste much time getting on the board as Ryan Leadens found the net from the corner of the rink for the games first points. Teal Plaine would assist on the goal, for the first of his four points on the night. Plaine would be the next to find the back of the net as he tipped in a shot from Wyatt LaVigne right in front of the net. Plaine would score again before the period would close as he scored a ricochet goal, again down in front of the net. The Lions would get a goal before the period would end to close the gap. Going into the first intermission it was UMC up by two at 3-1. The two teams would trade goals in the second period with Finlandia scoring first to get back to within one. Plaine would complete the hat trick in the second with his third goal of the game. Matt Hann would have an assist on all three of Plaine's goals. As the teams shared goals, the Golden Eagles still held the two point advantage going into the final period up 4-2. A goal by Brent Groenke under two minutes into the final period would be enough for the Golden Eagles to hang on for the victory. Finlandia made a run for it in the third scoring two goals and firing 13 more at Golden Eagle goalie Jaden Isakson. Isakson had a tremendous night in net stopping 44 Lion shots including several breakaways. Finlandia would pull their goalie with under a minute left to gain the extra man, but their efforts would fall short as UMC was able to hold off the late charge and skate home with the 5-4 victory. With the win UMC is now 5-15-2 on the season and 5-12-1 in the MCHA while Finlandia drops to 7-11-3 on the year and 7-7-3 in conference play. The Golden Eagles go for the sweep tomorrow afternoon at 2:00pm.

(2/4/06)- Early Lead Doesn't Hold Up Versus Marian (Crookston, Minn.) - The hot shooting Marian College Sabres stayed hot today as they completed the series sweep of the Golden Eagles in Fon du Lac, WI winning 8-4. The Golden Eagles would be up early with three consecutive goals in the first period. Marian would begin the scoring just under two minutes into the game, but then UMC came storming back starting with a Teal Plaine goal at the 3:52 mark. Nate Haskins and Patrick Knutson would each also score goals in the first period putting the Golden Eagles up 3-1. The first period scoring wouldn't end there as Marian scored three more times to take back the lead and head into intermission up 4-3. The second period began with Marian scoring followed by Teal Plaines second goal of the game. The Golden Eagles headed into the final period still down by one at 5-4. In the third it was all Marian as they put two more goals past the Golden Eagle goalie. The Sabres would also score an empty net goal at the end of the game for a final score of 8-4. With the loss UMC is now 4-15-2 on the season and 4-12-1 in the MCHA while Marian improves to 10-11-0 on the year and 10-6-0 in conference play. The Golden Eagles are back in Crookston next weekend for a series with Finlandia University.

(2/3/06)- Golden Eagles Fall To Marian College
Marian's Billy Schill got the scoring started in the first period with his goal at the 4:27 mark. Marian would add another goal in the period to go up 2-0 heading into the first intermission. In the second period the Sabres would add another before the Golden Eagles Matt Hann scored his team's lone goal. Marian would find the net again before the end of the period. In the third the Sabres tacked on three more goals while the Golden Eagles were held scoreless to finish the game with the 7-1 score. With the loss UMC is now 4-14-2 on the season and 4-10-1 in the MCHA while Marian improves to 9-11-0 on the year and 9-6-0 in conference play. The Golden Eagles will go for the split tomorrow when the teams square off again.

(1/28/06)- Golden Eagles Earn Weekend Split (Crookston, Minn.) - After dropping a heart breaker last night in overtime, the Golden Eagles came out inspired and scored three first period goals on their way to a 4-3 win this afternoon over the visiting Lawrence University Vikings. Last night the first period saw no scoring, Wyatt LaVigne made sure that wouldn't be the case tonight as he beat the Viking goalie less than three minutes into the game to put UMC up 1-0. Power plays would be the key to scoring in the rest of the period, as each goal came when the team had the man advantage. Patrick Knutson would put UMC up 2-0 with his goal ten minutes later. Lawrence would get back to within one when David Olynyk beat Golden Eagle goalie Brett Shelanski. Ryan Leadens would close the scoring for the first period with another power play goal with under three minutes left in the period. Heading into the first intermission, it was UMC up 3-1. Shelanski would shut out the Vikings in the second period stopping 11 Lawrence shots while Brent Groenke added to the UMC lead scoring the Golden Eagles fourth goal on a pass from Teal Plaine. UMC would start the third period up 4-1, but Lawrence would make it interesting scoring two goals in the period to be within one in the final minutes of the game. The first of the two was at the six minute mark with the final goal of the game coming just five minutes later. With a minute to go, and down by one, Lawrence would pull their goalie for an extra skater. The Golden Eagles would manage to get to puck down to the empty net but the pass in front was missed and they couldn't convert for the insurance goal. Shelanski made 15 saves in the period to preserve the win. With the win UMC is now 4-13-2 on the season and 4-9-1 in the MCHA while Lawrence drops to 7-10-2 on the year and 6-6-2 in conference play. The Golden Eagles hit the road next weekend for a series with Marian College.

(1/27/06)- Lawrence Drops Golden Eagles in Overtime Thriller (Crookston, Minn.) - In a back and forth game, the UMC hockey team gave Lawrence University all it could handle as they played into overtime before a winner was declared. After three minutes in the extra session it was the Vikings prevailing with the 3-2 victory. The games first period was a clean one, and flew by without a goal or a penalty. The Golden Eagles would take their shots, doubling up Lawrence in the period 14-7; however, Viking net minder Andrew Isaac would keep UMC out of the net. Golden Eagle goalie Kyle Knudsen would make seven saves in the first period shut out. The second period saw a familiar face, Patrick Knutson, break the tie. His goal at the 9:11 mark brought the games first points and a UMC lead. The Golden Eagles heavy shooting would subside a little in the second with only eight shots, but Lawrence would turn the tables and take 14 of their own. Knudsen would manage to keep 13 of those out of the net and the teams went into the final intermission tied at one apiece. The teams would trade goals again in the third with the Vikings striking first. Pete Mossberg would find the back of the net after 12 minutes of play to put his team up by one. Matt Hann would answer back as UMC capitalized on a two man advantage. Hann scored on a backhander in front of the Viking net. Hann would also get lose on a break away before the end of regulation but Isaac would make a huge save to send his team into overtime. In overtime the winning goal would come off a deflection right in front of the Golden Eagle goalie and hit in the corner of the net. Joe Searl scored the winning goal for his team. With the loss UMC is now 3-13-2 on the season and 3-9-1 in the MCHA while Lawrence improves to 7-9-2 on the year and 6-5-2 in conference play. The Golden Eagles will look for the split tomorrow afternoon when the two teams square off again at 2:00pm.

(1/23/06)- Knutson Earns 100th Point of Golden Eagle Career (Crookston, Minn.) - Golden Eagle Hockey player Patrick Knutson (Sr., Forward, East Grand Forks, MN) recorded three points this weekend against Milwaukee School of Engineering to surpass the 100 career points milestone at UMC. Knutson now has 101 total points (55 goals, 46 assists). Knutson reached the century mark on Friday, January 20th when he recorded assists on a Matt Hann even-strength goal and a Ryan Leadens powerplay goal. On Saturday, January 21st, Knutson surpassed the 100 point mark by scoring the first goal of the game on a powerplay. To date, Knutson leads the Golden Eagle Hockey team in goals (11) and powerplay goals (6). He is second on the team in points (20) and shots (41) and currently ranked third in assists (9). Knutson will look to add to his point total this weekend as the team hosts Lawrence University in MCHA Conference Action. Friday's game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start while the puck drops on Saturday at 2 p.m. Both games will take place at the Crookston Civic Arena. (Note: Brock Anundson is UMC Hockey's career point's leader (112- 51 goals, 61 assists).
(1/21/06)- MSOE Sweeps Golden Eagles (Crookston, Minn.) - The Golden Eagle hockey team couldn't find an answer to #1 ranked (MCHA) Milwaukee School of Engineering this afternoon as the host Raiders completed the weekend sweep with an 11-2 victory. Patrick Knutson got the Golden Eagles going early with a power play goal in the games first five minutes. MSOE would answer back and tie the game on a Simon Labrosse goal just over a minute later. The Raiders would add two more goals before the Golden Eagles Jay Visger got UMC back on the board still in the first period. MSOE would add another goal before the period close and head into the first intermission up 4-2. The Golden Eagles were shut out in the next two periods while the MSOE offense heated up scoring four in the second and three in the third to close out the game. With the loss UMC is now 3-12-2 on the season and 3-8-1 in the MCHA while Milwaukee improves to 12-4-1 on the year and 10-1-1 in conference play. The Golden Eagles return to Crookston next weekend for a two game set with Lawrence University, game times are 7:30 on the 27th and 2:00 on the 28th.

(1/20/06)- Knutson Nets 100th Point In Loss (Crookston, Minn.) - The Golden Eagles took their two game winning streak on the road to Milwaukee this weekend but had it stopped by the Raiders of the Milwaukee School of Engineering 9-2. The Raiders raced out to a 3-0 first period lead and never looked back as skated away with the victory. The Raiders would find the net twice in the games first five minutes to hold the early advantage. The second period began with UMC getting back into the game with a Matt Hann goal from Patrick Knutson after just three minutes of play. Milwaukee would answer back with a goal later in the period to go back up by three. Ryan Leadens would get into the act also in the second period with his power play goal at the 16 minute mark. The beneficiaries of the first goal, Hann and Knutson would add the assists. Also with his second point of the game, Knutson would attain the 100th point of his Golden Eagle career, just one of two players to reach such an accomplishment. Knutson narrowly missed reaching the milestone a week before. After a hat trick on Friday, he was held scoreless in the second game of the series. The third period would begin with a 5-2 score, but that would quickly all change as Mark Leitzan took over the game with his four goal performance in the period, three of which were just over a minute apart. He would provide all the scoring in the period as Milwaukee won the game 9-2. With the loss UMC is now 3-11-2 on the season and 3-7-1 in the MCHA while Milwaukee improves to 11-4-1 on the year and 9-1-1 in conference play. The Golden Eagles go for the split tomorrow in Milwaukee, the puck drops at 2:00 p.m.

(1/16/06)- Brent Groenke Named MCHA Player of the Week
Players of the Week: -Milwaukee School of Engineering junior goalie Matt Burzon (Danby, Vt.) wins the MCHA Defensive Player-of-the-Week for the third time this season. The construction management major was between the pipes for the Raiders' 7-1 victory over Finlandia on Friday night, stopping 23 of 24 Lion shots in the win. He now leads the MCHA in goals-against-average (1.50), save percentage (.942) and winning percentage (1.000, a perfect 6-0). -Marian College freshman forward Billy Schill (Sault Ste. Marie, ONT) is the MCHA Freshman-of-the-Week for his efforts in the Sabres split with Lawrence. On Friday, he played a role in each of Marian's scores, recording a goal and two assists in the 5-3 loss. Then, on Saturday, he added another goal and two assists to give him a six-point (2G/4A) weekend. He was also +5 on the ice for the series. (1/14/06)- Golden Eagles Complete the Sweep of Northland (Crookston, Minn.) - For the first time this season the Golden Eagles won back to back games and in doing so swept the weekend series with visiting Northland College, winning this afternoon 6-5. The UMC offense stayed hot this afternoon scoring six goals after last nights seven. After losing the night before Northland came out looking for a victory and scored the games first two points, getting the puck past Golden Eagle goalie Jaden Isakson. Sophomore Matt Hann would get the Golden Eagles started when he found the net at the 14:20 mark of the first period. Fellow sophomore Teal Plaine evened the score for UMC with his power play goal just three minutes later. They would go into the first intermission tied at two apiece. UMC would score the lone goal of the second period when Travis Pederson beat the Northland goalie. Heading into the final stanza, the Golden Eagles held a one goal advantage at 3-2. Matt Hann found the back of the net again as he started the third period scoring after just three minutes of play. The Golden Eagles two goal advantage would not hold up as the Northland offense again came back to tie the game 4-4. But UMC wanted this one just a little more and Brent Groenke would put the final nails in the coffin with a power play goal to take the lead followed by a unassisted break away where he beat the Northland goalie one on one for the game winner. Northland would pull their goalie in a late attempt to tie the game, but would get just one goal and fall one point shy. In the game senior Patrick Knutson was held scoreless and remains two points shy of the 100th of his career. With the win UMC is now 3-10-2 on the season and 3-6-1 in the MCHA while Northland drops to 2-13 on the year and 1-9 in conference play. The Golden Eagles head to Milwaukee, WI next weekend for a two game set with the Milwaukee School of Engineering.

(1/13/06)- Knutson Hat Trick Leads to Coach Warren's 400th Victory (Crookston, Minn.) - Coach Gary Warren reached a career milestone tonight as his team got back on the winning track with a 7-5 victory over visiting Northland College for his 400th career college coaching victory. Patrick Knutson would be the star of the evening as the senior captain helped secure the win with a hat trick. Two of his goals would come in the third period as UMC slammed the door on a Northland comeback. The first period would go scoreless for the first half as UMC goalie Jaden Isakson made some spectacular saves to keep Northland off the board. However the Lumberjacks would prevail with a ricochet goal in front of the net. Golden Eagle Brett Miller tied the game later in the period as the teams skated to a tie in the first. Northland again would be the first to find the net scoring twice early in the second period. After going down by two goals Ryan Leadens woke up the Golden Eagle offense with an unassisted power play goal followed shortly by a goal from Brent Groenke to again tie the score. Knutson would find the net for the first time before time ran out in the second as he slapped the puck past the Northland goalie as it was being bounced around in front of the net. Knutson started the third where he left off in the second as he went high glove side for his second goal of the night to give UMC the two goal advantage. Northland wouldn't quit and battled back with two more goals to again tie the game with half a period to play. Then Knutson would seal the deal as he again went glove side for the game winner completing the hat trick. Brent Groenke would add an insurance goal later in the period as the game finished with the 7-5 score. Along with Coach Warren's milestone, Knutson, after his three points tonight, is just two away from 100 in his career, becoming just the second Golden Eagle to reach such an accomplishment. With the win UMC is now 2-10-2 on the season and 2-6-1 in the MCHA while Northland drops to 2-12 on the year and 1-8 in conference play. The Golden Eagles go for the sweep tomorrow afternoon at 2:00pm.

(Crookston, Minn.) - A hot shooting Gustavus Adolphus team was too much for the Golden Eagles as the Gusties downed UMC in St. Peter by a score of 10-2. Gustavus would go up 2-0 before the Golden Eagles Matt Hann took a Teal Plaine pass and scored a short handed goal with under a minute remaining in the first period. It appeared as if UMC would head into the first intermission down just a goal at 2-1, but the Gusties would add another just seconds later to take a two goal advantage at 3-1. In the second UMC would get shut out while Gustavus tacked on three more going up 6-1 heading into the final period. In the third, Gustavus erased all doubt of a win with four more goals added to their total. The Golden Eagles Brent Groenke would manage to score the second UMC goal midway through the period. The loss leaves UMC at just 1-10-2 on the season while Gustavus improves to 9-2. Next for UMC is a weekend series with Northland College in Crookston. Game times are 7:30pm on the 13th and 2:00pm on the 14th.

(1/7/06)- UMC & St. Olaf Tie in Non-Conference Play (Crookston, Minn.) - The Golden Eagles raced out to a 3-0 lead and then hung on for a 4-4 overtime tie as they battled St. Olaf. Ryan Leadens, Matt Hann, and Patrick Knutson all had goals in the first period as UMC opened up a three goal lead. The lead would not last long as the Oles answered back with a pair of goals before the period would end. Golden Eagle Reid Huttunen socred an unassisted goal early in the second to put UMC back up by two, but St. Olaf would answer back with a power play and head into the final period down just one at 4-3. In the final period the Oles would keep their hopes alive with the period's lone score as Justin Green found the net on an unassisted goal. The overtime period would not see any scoring and the Golden Eagles would manage just one shot on the net, while UMC goaltender Brett Shelanski would make seven stops to preserve the tie. On the night Shelanski stopped 43 Ole shots. The tie gives UMC a record of 1-9-2 while St. Olaf is 2-5-4. Next for UMC Gustavus Adolphus, before a weekend series with Northland College in Crookston.

(12/10/05)- Three Goal Second Period Lifts Lions Past Golden Eagles (Crookston, Minn.) - The Golden Eagles were swept by Finlandia University this past weekend as the Lions won the second game 8-4. After a high scoring first period UMC saw themselves head into the first intermission up by a goal at 3-2. Brent Gorenke, Wyatt LaVigne, and Patrick Knutson all had goals for the Golden Eagles in the period. The second period would prove to be the difference in the game, as the Lions found the net three times while keeping UMC out of theirs. It looked as if the teams would head into the final period tied at three apiece, but Finlandia found the net twice in the last minute of the period to go up by two. Finlandia would add one more in the third before Dustin Steigauf would score UMC's final goal. Coach Warren pulled the goalie in the third to gain the man advantage, but the Lions were able to score twice on the empty net. The loss leaves the Golden Eagles at 1-9-1 over all and 1-6-1 in the conference. UMC is off until after the New Year when they head to St. Peter, MN to play St. Olaf on January 7th and Gustavus on the 8th.

(12/9/05)- Golden Eagles Can't Hold On to Early Lead (Crookston, Minn.) - The UMC Hockey team scored the games first two goals but host Finlandia scored the next five on their way to a 7-4 win in Hancock, MI Matt Hann and Ryan Leadens got the Golden Eagles in the board early with a pair of first period goals. Finlandia would also get on the board before the period expired to trail 2-1 into the first intermission. The Lions would score three unanswered goals in the second period and lead 4-2 heading into the final period. Finlandia would extend their lead by again getting on the board first in the third period. Matt Hann would find the net again for the Golden Eagles to bring UMC back within three goals. UMC would get their fourth goals of the game when they pulled Jaden Isakson out of goal and Ben Larson scored with the man advantage. It would be too little too late however as the Lions scored three total in the final period to get the 7-4 win. With the loss, UMC in just 1-8-1 in all games and 1-5-1 in the MCHA. The Golden Eagles will try to get the split this afternoon in Hancock. The University of Minnesota, Crookston is a NCAA Division II institution and a member of the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association.

(12/4/05)- Wasted Power Plays Cost Golden Eagles
The first period finished without a score as the two goalies defended all opposing shots. In the second period Marian took the lead and would not trail in the game. The Sabres scored a pair of quick goals within a minute of each other to take a 2-0 lead into the final period. Just 14 seconds into the third period the Golden Eagles Patrick Knutson scored a short handed goal to bring UMC back within one. His effort would be wasted however as Marian answered back with a goal less than 30 seconds later. UMC wasn't done as Wyatt LaVigne scored a power play goal later in the period to put the Golden Eagles with one again. Marian would score twice more in the final period as the game came to a close at 5-2. UMC is now 1-7-1 on the year and 1-4-1 in conference play. Next weekend they travel to Hancock, MI for a pair of conference games with Finlandia University on December 9th and 10th.

(12/3/05)- Golden Eagles Fall To Marian (Crookston, Minn.) - A four goal second period by Marian College did the Golden Eagles in this evening as they fall to the visiting Sabres 6-4 in Crookston. UMC started the scoring midway through the first period with Reid Huttunen's power play goal. Marian would even the score later in the period as they put the puck past Kyle Knudsen. In the second period in less than six minutes the Sabres scored four goals to take a 5-1 advantage. The first three would come against Knudsen, after UMC went down 4-1, they made the switch from Knudsen to Brett Shelanski, and Marian quickly scored there fourth goal of the period. The third would go over half way with out a score, then in a desperate move to get back in the game the Golden Eagles pulled Shelanski in favor of an empty net with seven minutes to go in the period. The gamble would pay off as Billy Becker scored as UMC had the one man advantage. Later in the period UMC would pull Shelanski again and would score again to make the score 5-4. After the ensuing face off Marian would score on the empty net for the final score of 6-4. With the loss UMC drops to 1-6-1 on the season and 1-3-1 in MCHA play. Marian is now 3-5 and 3-2 in the Conference. The two teams square off again tomorrow at the Crookston Civic Arena at 2:00pm.

(11/21/05)- Knudsen Earns MCHA Defensive POW Honors Minnesota-Crookston Golden Eagles junior goalie Kyle Knudsen (Mead, WA) gives Crookston their first league honors of the season as well, as he is the MCHA Defensive Player-of-the-Week. He went 1-0-1 on the week, playing the entire weekend against Lawrence. He made made 42 saves in the 3-3 draw on Friday before making 32 more stops in the win on Saturday. His numbers for the week included a 1.92 GAA and a .949 save percentage.
(11/19/05)- UMC Takes Weekend Series with Win Over Lawrence (Crookston, Minn.) - The Golden Eagles scored the first three goals of the game on their way to their first win of the season. UMC took the weekend series from Lawrence with the 3-1 win. Golden Eagle captain Dustin Steigauf started the scoring with an unassisted goal in the first period. His goal would be the only score of the first period. Reid Huttunen extended the UMC lead with a power play goal in the second period. The Golden Eagles Ryan Tucker would round out the UMC scoring with another power play in the period. The Vikings would get on the board with a goal in the third period, but that would be all the scoring for them, and would be all the scoring in the game. The win is the first of the season for UMC and gives them an overall record of 1-5-1 and a MCHA record of 1-2-1. The Golden Eagles take the Thanksgiving weekend off and return to action on December 3rd and 4th in Crookston for a two game set with Marian College.

(11/18/05)- UMC and Lawrence Tie at 3 A-Piece (Crookston, Minn.) - For the third game in a row the Golden Eagles found themselves playing an extra session, this time however, would yield a different result. This time UMC would finish with a 3-3 tie versus Lawrence University. Lawrence opened up the scoring early with a goal in the games first minutes. The Vikings would add another goal in the period to go up 2-0. Before the period would close, the Golden Eagles Patrick Knutson brought UMC back with a late goal. The Golden Eagles Matt Hann didn't waste any time in the second period as he scored and unassisted goal after just 15 seconds of play to tie the game. UMC would battle all the way back to take the lead when Teal Plaine put the Golden Eagles ahead midway through the period. Lawrence would answer back and tie the game again with another goal in the second period. That would be all the scoring in the game, as the two teams skated to the tie. The Golden Eagles continued to fire shots but couldn't manage to score. UMC goalie Kyle Kundsen preserved the tie with 17 saves in the third period and overtime, he would finish with 42 saves on the day. With the tie UMC is now 0-5-1 and 0-2-1 in MCHA play. They will look to take the series against Lawrence tomorrow.

(11/15/05)- Golden Eagles Fall In Overtime For Second Straight Game (Crookston, Minn.) - For the second time in as many games the UMC Hockey team loses a 5-4 overtime decision, this time to Concordia Moorhead. The Golden Eagles got on the board first when Teal Plaine scored after over sixteen minutes of play. Plaine's goal would be the only in the first period. The only second period goal would come from the Cobbers with just four seconds to play. A scoring explosion came in the third period as the teams scored three apiece. Wyatt LaVigne would put the Golden Eagles ahead again when he beat the Cobber goalie. Plaine would find the net again as he extended the UMC lead. Concordia would battle back with two goals of their own to tie the game again. The game of back and forth continued when Patrick Knutson scored what appeared to be the game winning goal with just two minutes remaining in the game. The assumption was wrong when Concordia scored just one minute later to again tie the game and force overtime. In the extra period the Cobbers found the net after just 29 seconds to escape with the win. With the loss the Golden Eagles are still winless with an 0-5 record, while Concordia is still perfect at 4-0. The weekend the Golden Eagles are in Appleton, WI for two games with MCHA foe Lawrence University.

(11/12/05)- Squandered Power Plays Hurt Golden Eagles (Crookston, Minn.) - The Golden Eagles dropped an overtime decision today to Milwaukee School of Engineering 5-4. UMC had 13 power play opportunities on the afternoon but only managed to take 17 shots, while the Raiders took 14 shots on just six power plays. The difference however, was the two shorthanded goals that MSOE scored in the second period. The first period finished without a score, but the second period saw six goals reach the back of the net. MSOE would go up 2-0 with a pair of quick goals early in the period before Patrick Knutson scored on a power play. The Raiders would get a pair of quick goals again as they scored two shorthanded goals with two minutes of each other. Before the second period wound down Matt Hann would get a power play goal of his own as the period finished with a 4-2 score. UMC would score the only two goals in the final period as they tied the score. The first came on another power play as Ryan Tucker beat the Raider goalie. The Golden Eagles finally got the score tied as Brent Groenke scored midway through the third period. In over time the Golden Eagles couldn't manage to get a shot on net as MSOE won the game two minutes into the extra period. UMC now sits at 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the MCHA.

(11/11/05)- After Delayed Start Golden Eagles Come Out Flat (Crookston, Minn.) - A power outage at the Crookston Civic Arena delayed the start of tonight's MCHA match-up between the University of Minnesota, Crookston and the Milwaukee School of Engineering. The Raiders scored early and often on their way to a 7-3 victory over the Golden Eagles. The Raiders scored two first period goals to take the early advantage. They would use the power play to their advantage in the second period as they twice capitalized on Golden Eagle penalties. MSOE would also add an even strength goal late in the period before UMC got on the board. Brent Groenke scored late in the second as the puck was bouncing around in front of the Raider net. In the third period each team would trade two goals as they played to the 7-3 finish. Rough play also came out in the final period as the two teams committed 13 penalties including a major and a game misconduct. Brent Groenke finished with a pair of goals on the evening while Nate Haskins added the third. UMC will try to even the score when the two teams meet again tomorrow afternoon at 2:00pm. The Golden Eagles are still winless on the young season at 0-3, and are 0-1 in MCHA play.

(11/8/05)- Golden Eagles Lose First Game at Home (Crookston, Minn.) - The Golden Eagle Hockey team just fell short of a home opening win tonight in front of a large opening crowd. The Cobbers of Concordia College beat UMC by a final score of 4-3. Concordia would get on the board first as Mark Buchholz lifted the puck past Golden Eagle goalie Brett Shelanski. After an interference penalty against the Cobbers, Ryan Leadens took a Teal Plaine pass in front of the net to even the score. It looked as if the teams would skate to an even first period, but the Cobbers were able to find the back of the net with just 00:29 left in the period. In the second period Teal Plaine would add a goal of his own to even the score at two apiece. Concordia would soon answer back however, as Anthony Olsen beat Shelanski just under two minutes later. The third period would be similar to the second with each team trading goals, but this time it would be Concordia getting the goal first to gain a two point advantage. Concordia's Dan Perry would score on a break away to put the Cobbers up. UMC wouldn't quit as Teal Plaine scored his second goal of the night, this time short handed as Matt Hann led the puck up to Plaine on a break away. UMC would pull Shelanski late but could not use the advantage to tie to game. The loss leaves UMC 0-2 on the young season while Concordia improves to 3-0. Next up for the Golden Eagles, the Milwaukee School of Engineering comes to town for a weekend conference match-up on the 11th (7:30 pm) and 12th (2:00 pm). The University of Minnesota, Crookston is a NCAA Division II institution and a member of the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association.

(10/29/05)- Golden Eagles Drop Season Opener (Crookston, Minn.) - The UMC Hockey team got the season off on the wrong foot losing a 7-2 decision to the University of Wisconsin, Stout. Stout found the net first when they scored midway through the first period. The period would end with a 1-0 Stout advantage. The Blue Devils would start the second period in a flurry as they scored twice inside the first two minutes, the second coming on a power play.
