(1/6/07)- Leadens Hat Trick Leads Golden Eagles To Victory In Overtime Thriller

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Golden Eagle Hockey team came into tonight's match with Southern New Hampshire University with a sweep on their minds. They would have to work extra, but UMC earned the sweep with the 6-5 overtime victory.

The first goal came midway through the first period when Chris Sculley (Fr., F, Papillion, Neb.) fired a shot to the net and it was deflected in by Ryan Leadens (Sr., F, South St. Paul, Minn.). The Golden Eagle's kept the pressure on and scored the second goal of the period three and a half minutes later when John Lombardi (Fr., F, Apple Valley, Minn.) found the back corner of the Penmen net. He was assisted by Fred Kooser (Fr., F, Omaha, Neb.) and Matt Marchel (Fr., D, Grand Forks, N.D.). The score at the close of the first period was 2-0.

Seven minutes into the second period Ryan Leadens scored his second goal of the night, with assists from Teal Plaine (Jr., F, Hallock, Minn.) and Matt Hann (Jr., F, Crookston, Minn.). UMC was up 3-0 in the second session when Penmen forward Ryan DiBartolomeo beat UMC goalie Kyle Knudsen (Sr., G, Mead, Wash.) for Southern New Hampshire's first goal of the night. Before the second period ended, the Golden Eagles would score again. This time Hann took a pass from Leadens and would beat the Penmen net minder to bring the score to 4-1.

Southern New Hampshire came storming back in the third scoring two goals in the period to get within one of the Golden Eagles. Leadens earned the hat trick later in the third with his third goal of the game putting UMC back up by two six minutes left to play. His three goals would no be enough however to win the game in regulation. With less then one minute remaining in the game Southern New Hampshire pulled their goalie and skated with six men looking to come back from the two goal deficit. The gamble would pay off when the Penmen scored the two goals they needed to tie the game, the tying goal coming with just a second remaining in the game.

The overtime session would not last long as the evening's star Ryan Leadens broke free with puck looking for the game winner and his fourth goal of the night. The Penmen goalie would make a great save to deny Leadens but Matt Hann was trailing the play and was there to tap in the ricochet for the game winner and weekend sweep.

With the win the Golden Eagles are now 4-7-1 on the season. Next weekend they are on the road for a MCHA conference matchup with Northland College in Ashland, Wis.

(Crookston, Minn.) - The Golden Eagles lost a heartbreaker this afternoon at the Crookston Civic Arena. Finlandia scored twice in the first to take the early lead with a pair of goals at the 3:31 mark and the 5:40 mark. Less than a minute later the roles were reversed and the score was tied when Leadens took a pass from Plaine to even the score at two apiece.

(11/18/06) Golden Eagles Play to 1-1 Tie In Overtime

(Crookston, Minn.) - After a big win for UMC the evening before, and plenty of offense from each team, the Golden Eagles and the Lawrence University Vikings played to a 1-1 tie this afternoon in Crookston.

The two teams played a scoreless first half that was briefly interrupted by a partial power outage at the Crookston Civic Arena. With just over five minutes remaining in the opening period, half the lights went dark and the game was postponed for 15 minutes. The teams headed to the locker room for an early intermission. After the lights came back on they played the rest of the first which ended scoreless at 0-0. After a very short one minute break between the first and second period the players came back on the ice. The defense was again strong blocking many shots while each goalie did their best to keep the opponent off the board. Lawrence was the first to light the lamp at the 16:50 mark of the second when Evan Thornton found the back of the net. The Golden Eagles would answer back before the period ended when Ryan Leadens (Sr. F, South St. Paul, Minn.) took a pass from Teal Plaine (Jr. F, Hallock, Minn.) and Matt Hann (Jr. F, Crookston, Minn.) and scored to tie the game with less than a minute remaining in the period.

In the third period neither team could manage to score and the Golden Eagle defense kept the Vikings in check only allowing three shots on goal in the period. In overtime, Lawrence managed four shots but UMC goalie Kyle Knudsen (Sr. G, Mead, Wash.) made the key saves to preserve the tie. The tie was the first of the season for each team and UMC is now 1-3-1 and 1-2-1 in the MCHA while Lawrence is now 2-3-1 and 2-1-1 in the MCHA. (Crookston, Minn.) - The Golden Eagle Hockey team played their first home game of the regular season this evening beating the visiting Lawrence University Vikings 6-3.

Lawrence started the scoring in the first with a goal at the 1:24 mark. The Golden Eagles would answer back quickly to tie it when Teal Plaine (Jr. F, Hallock, Minn.) scored a power play goal at 5:37 of the first. UMC wasn't done in the period, before time ran out John Lombardi (Fr. F, Apple Valley, Minn.) fired a shot from near the blue line that went top shelf and beat the Viking goalie. At the end of one, it was the Golden Eagles leading 2-1.

Lawrence would score first in the period again when the Vikings Marc Howe scored to tie the score six minutes into the second period. At the 12:02 mark the Golden Eagles Matt Hann (Jr. F, Crookston, Minn.) carried the puck down into the Lawrence zone and snuck a shot past the Viking goalie as Hann skated across the front of the net. The goal gave UMC the lead at 3-2, and they would not trail again. The Golden Eagles Fred Kooser (Fr. F, Omaha, Neb.) scored the game winner less than two minutes later to put UMC up 4-2. Later in the third, UMC added an insurance goal when Donovan Haugstad (Fr. F, Hallock, Minn.) scored at the 16:41 mark. Through two periods it was UMC leading 5-2.

Lawrence would again score first in the third just over a minute into play making the score 5-3. However, UMC goalie Kyle Knudsen (Sr. G, Mead, Wash.) would keep them out of the net for the remainder of the game. Knudsen finished the game with 22 saves including some huge stops when the puck was being batted around in front of the net. In a desperate effort the Vikings pulled their goalie late in the game which proved to be costly as Lombardi got a hold of the puck and put it in the net for the easy goal giving him two on the night.

The Golden Eagles pick up their first win of the season improving their record to 1-3 over all and 1-2 in the MCHA while Lawrence suffers their first conference loss and sits at 2-3 overall and 2-1 in MCHA play. (Crookston, Minn.) - The Briercrest College Clippers committed 49 minutes in penalties this afternoon to give the Golden Eagles 10 power play opportunities. Unfortunately, UMC would catch the penalty bug and tally 49 minutes of penalties themselves to balance the playing field. Briercrest would use three quick third period goals to skate by UMC 5-3.

Both teams started out the game a little cautious, not wanting to be the first team to make a mistake and the first period closed with no scoring. The second period would see two Briercrest goals in the first five minutes to give the Clippers a 2-0 lead. Jared LaCoste would score just 51 seconds into the period on a power-play goal. Teammate Murray Froese then beat the UMC goaltender at the 4:05 mark to give Briercrest the two goal advantage.
