(2/11/05)- Double Overtime Does in Golden Eagles

The Golden Eagles Women's basketball team lost a thriller to Southwest Minnesota State this evening in Crookston. The game took two overtimes to decide and when it was all said and done it was UMC taking the loss versus the Mustangs 83-79. In a game that saw senior Steph Mayclin score her 1000th point as a Golden Eagle, her double-double on the night was not enough. UMC held a one point advantage in the low scoring first half at 24-23. Karna Plaine had just seven points in the half to lead all scorers. Turnovers in the half are what led to each team's low scores. UMC had 10, while SMSU had 13 of their own. Also in the half each team was shooting around just 30 percent.

In the second half the turnovers would subside, but the shooting was still under 40 percent. The Mustangs were able to make up the one point deficit and finish regulation tied at 58. In the second half as UMC battled back from a Mustang run to tie it up, Steph Mayclin would hit a jumper to score her 1000th point and help bring UMC back. At the end of the second half Southwest's Michelle Bruns led all scorers with 19.

As overtime began, the game stayed close and would see the two teams each score nine in the extra five minutes. In the period UMC's Beth Jacobson would hit a big three pointer to keep UMC in it. Six of the Mustangs nine points were scored by Bruns. In the second overtime the Golden Eagle's Carly Score would come alive and hit two consecutive three's to put UMC up by seven. It would not be enough however as the Mustangs Regan French would score nine in the period to pull her team away. The win improves the Mustangs record to 15-8 overall and puts them over .500 at 5-4 in the NSIC. The loss is just the third in NSIC play for the Golden Eagles giving them a conference record of 6-3, and an overall record of 14-8.
