(2/26/06)- Golden Eagles Drop Final Game to Warriors (Crookston, Minn.)- On Senior Night in Lysaker Gymnasium the Golden Eagle Women couldn't rally past the visiting Winona State with the final score of 74-59. The Warriors jumped out to a big first half lead before the Golden Eagles would settle down. Karna Plaine was hounded all night and was held to just four points in the period and only one field goal. Plaine was not the only Golden Eagle with sub par shooting, as a team, UMC was 23% from the field compared to 41% for the Warriors. As the half moved on the Golden Eagles made a run to cut into the Winona lead and Plaine's lone field goal came on the last possession of the half after Brittani Boehlke stole the ball from the Warriors. At the break the Golden Eagles trailed 11 at 34-23. UMC started a little flat after the break, and Winona used that to increase their lead. The Warriors would take advantage of missed Golden Eagle shots and out rebound UMC 42-29 in the game. UMC would make a run however later in the half. The 10 point barrier would prove to be the achilles heel of the Golden Eagles, several times in the second half UMC would make a run to get the Warrior lead under 10, but it would stop there when the Warriors took back control of the game. Winona would add some buckets late in the game and finished with the final score of 74-59. Kari Score would finish one rebound shy of another double-double with 20 points and nine rebounds. In the first half the Golden Bears would make the best of the Golden Eagles mistakes. Concordia would turn nine UMC turnovers into 13 points. As the half went on the Golden Bears worked up a lead and continued to extend it as the half drew to a close. On the last possession of the period Concordia would put up a bad shot but get the offensive board and put a shot in as the buzzer sounded. Karna Plaine and Carly Score would lead all scorers with 11 points in the half. The second half each team would see their shooting percentage drop, unfortunately for the Golden Eagles theirs would drop further as they couldn't get the shots to fall. The Golden Bears took advantage of the missed shots to extend their lead in the second half, despite shooting poorly. In a high paced first half the Golden Eagles and the Wolves played even basketball. The game was back and forth with each team having trouble gaining the advantage. As the half closed the Golden Eagles trailed the Dragons 49-24. The Golden Eagles were able to turn things around a bit in the second half, and put together a rally to get them back within striking distance. However they would not be able to cut the deficit to less than 10 points despite outscoring the Dragons in the second half. UMC would be within 11 points late in the half, but that is as close as it would get. The Golden Eagles heated up their three-point shooting in the second half going 7-12 as they got back into the game. In the end, the Dragons were just too much and held on for the victory. With the loss UMC falls to 6-18 overall and 3-8 in the NSIC, while Minnesota State, Moorhead improves to 14-10 overall and 7-4 in the NSIC. (2/11/06)- Missed Free Throws and Turnovers Cost Golden Eagles (Crookston, Minn.) - Thirteen missed free throws and 26 turnovers cost the Golden Eagle Women tonight in Wayne, NE as they fell to the host Wildcats 79-50. UMC traveled to Wayne after their tough loss to Southwest Minnesota State on Friday night looking to bounce back into the win column. The Golden Eagles looked to be feeling the effects from their game the night before as they started sluggish and let the Wildcats jump out to a 12-4 lead to start the game. Karna Plaine who led all Golden Eagles with 19 points led the charge back as the Golden Eagles tied the score but costly turnovers helped the Wildcats take the lead back for good. The Golden Eagles would shoot only 35% from the free throw line and 45% from the field with only Karna Plaine (19pts.) and Kari Score (12pts.) breaking into double digits. The Golden Eagles struggled with ball security all night against the Wildcats producing 26 turnovers to Wayne State's eight. That would be as close as the Golden Eagles would get as the Mustangs went on a 9-0 run from there to take control of the game. Missed shots and poor shooting would be the demise of UMC as they shot 17 percent from the field in the first half. Missed free throws would also haunt the Golden Eagles as they shot 64 percent from the line. Karna Plaine would lead UMC with nine first half points. In a defensive first half UMC trailed by just five, and could have been closer with the Golden Eagles losing the ball out of bounds on a late fast break. UMC played a tough defense that never allowed UND to get into their rhythm. UMC went into the half trailing just 36-31. The Fighting Sioux made some big shots early in the second half and it seemed that they may begin to run away with it, but the Golden Eagles never let the lead get out of hand and stayed with UND all game. UMC held Sioux star Ashley Langen to just four points in the second half as they gave the UND a scare. The Sioux did all they could to let UMC back in the game but continuous turnovers late in the second half kept the Golden Eagles just out of reach.
